acknowledged to himself that his childhood memories were a blank canvas,
With a wry smile, he murmured, “Is that a promise I forgot from my past?”
He genuinely had no idea what Kelly meant earlier.
His eyes drifted to her business card lying on the table the one she’d left for him.
She had offered to assist him in any way he needed, simply because Alfred Kingston had instructed her to
Suddenly, his phone buzzed. Lifting it to his ear, he answered, “Yes, Sophia?”
“Where are you?” Sophia’s voice was sharp, tinged with impatience.
“Somewhere near Silver Mansion,” Alex replied casually.
She let out a weary sigh. “I’m not staying there anymore. We’re renting an apartment since we were kicked out.”

Alex raised an eyebrow. “But you’re the CEO of the Lancaster’s Group. Don’t you think it’s time to move back to Lancaster Mansion?”
A bitter chuckle escaped her. “It would be a nightmare. Everyone there is pressuring me to divorce you and marry someone they approve of. My grandmother hasn’t given up on that idea.”
“Do you need my help?” he asked gently.
“Yes,” she admitted, her voice softening.
“Could you come to our apartment? We need to… share a room so my parents will stop parading every eligible bachelor in front of me.”
He paused for a moment. “Alright. Send me the address. I’ll be there.”
As the call ended, a text popped up with the location.
Before leaving, Alex picked up Kelly’s card and sent her a message:
“I won’t be staying at the Golden Mansion tonight. You can use it with Jasmine. I’m heading out.”
He knew Kelly wouldn’t disturb Jasmine, who was asleep.
When he arrived at the modest apartment building, he climbed the stairs and rang the doorbell.
The door opened to reveal Florence, Sophia’s mother.
The moment she saw Alex, her expression hardened.
Without a word, she slammed the door shut in his face.
Inside, Sophia called out, “Was someone at the door? Why did you close it?”
“Just someone who got the wrong apartment,” Florence replied quickly, avoiding her daughter’s gaze.
The doorbell rang again, more insistently this time.
“Don’t open it,” Florence urged, a hint of panic in her voice.
But Sophia, suspicion growing, walked over and opened the door anyway.
As she expected, Alex stood there, hands in his pockets.
“Why are you here?” Florence demanded, glaring at him with undisguised disdain,

“Mother, he’s my husband,” Sophia interjected firmly. “Why can he be here with me?”
Florence scoffed. “He’s supposed to provide for you, not sponge of your living space. Isn’t it shameless?”
Sophia took a steadying breath, recognizing her mother’s familiar artics.
“As far as I know, I’m the one paying for this apartment. It’s my decision who stays here. Maybe you’d be more comfortable back at Silver Mansion with Grandma.”
Florence’s eyes flashed with indignation. “How dare you choose lilin over your own family!”
“Please don’t make this more difficult than it needs to be,” Sophia said calmly.
She reached out and took Alex’s hand. “Come on, let’s go to ‘our‘ room.”
As they walked away, Florence stood fuming, her dreams of a wealthy son–in–law slipping further away.
“Sophia, think about what you’re doing!” she called after them.
But Sophia closed her bedroom door firmly behind them, cutting off any further protests.
Inside the room, she released a tired sigh.
“You’ll sleep on the floor, and I’ll take the bed,” she stated, glancing at Alex.
He raised an eyebrow, a playful smirk tugging at his lips.
“That’s not exactly fair. You invited me over just to make me sleep on the floor? Maybe I should head back to the Golden Mansion–plenty of space there. Care to join me?”
She let out a short laugh. “Very funny. You expect me to believe you have access to the Golden Mansion?”
He shrugged lightly. “Believe what you want.”
“Such a gentleman,” she retorted sarcastically. “So you think I should be the one sleeping on the floor?”
“Well,” he said with a mischievous gleam in his eye, “aren’t we all about equality these days?”
She rolled her eyes. “Fine. Let’s settle this fairly.”
Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out a coin. “We’ll flip for it. Loser sleeps on the floor.”
“Agreed,” he nodded. “But toss
onto the floor, not into your hand.”
“Alright,” she agreed, slightly exasperated. “Call it.”
“Heads,” Alex declared confidently.
“Then I’ll take tails.”
She flicked the coin into the air.
It spun and clattered onto the hardwood floor, bouncing unpredictably before–impossibly–landing on its edge, perfectly upright.
They both stared in disbelief.
“Well, that’s… unlikely,” Alex remarked, a grin spreading across his face. “So what’s the verdict? We both share tl both take the floor?”
”
or we
“No way,” Sophia protested. “That doesn’t count. Best two out of three.”
She scooped up the coin and tossed it again.

Astonishingly, it landed on its edge once more.
“This is ridiculous!” she exclaimed, frustration creeping into her voice.
“Maybe it’s a sign,” he teased.
She shot him a glare. “Again.”
After several more attempts, each resulting in the same improbable outcome,
she huffed in defeat.
“Did you tamper with this coin?”

He chuckled. “You’re the one who brought it out. Maybe it’s just fate.”
“Ugh, you’re impossible,” she muttered.
Giving up, she grabbed an extra pillow and placed it down the middle of the bed. “Fine. We’ll share the bed, but this is the line. Don’t cross it.”
“Works for me,” he said easily “Good fences make good neighbors”
Then, with a cheeky smile, he added, “But if you happen to cross over, I promise I won’t mind.”
She felt a blush creep up her neck but masked it with a scowl. “Don’t flatter yourself.”
