Chapter 10
The police arrived within ten minutes and took all of us to the station.
“Mr. Gray, we understand the situation clearly now.”
The officer looked troubled.
“In this vast world, people can look similar. This Ms. Lin is definitely not your wife.”
My parents had divorced when I was young, and neither had been very involved in my life.
After the car accident, my mother had filed death papers and canceled my registration.
Legally speaking, the previous Victoria Hawthorne no longer existed.
My current identity had been arranged by Tyler. It was registered in Switzerland, with no connection to the previous Victoria Hawthorne.
Tyler had lied to me, saying he’d just gotten me a Swiss identity to make it easier for our future children to study abroad.
Jackson laughed bitterly.
“Swiss resident? Let her speak German.”
I said: “Hau ab, du Arschloch!”
“Pfft-”
Tyler lowered his head, his shoulders shaking.
Jackson’s face turned ashen.
“Victoria, you weren’t like this before.”
“What does that prove? It proves you’ve got the wrong person. I’m not that Victoria Hawthorne you
said.”
Chapter 10
“Officer, I think he’s gone crazy missing his wife. Will he try to kidnap me again in the future?”
The police officer reassured me repeatedly that Harris City had excellent security, and to contact them immediately if anything happened.
He also gave Jackson a threatening look.
“Mr. Gray has a large business and reputation. Surely he wouldn’t want this kind of scandal, right?”
Jackson had no choice but to sign the statement.
One of the officers knew Tyler and enthusiastically offered to drive us home.
“Dr. Reed, call us if you need anything.”
“New York billionaire or not, no one is above the law.”
“We don’t play that game in Harris.”
Once home, as soon as the door closed, Tyler hugged me tightly from behind.
“Victoria baby, I was so scared.”
His whole body trembled as he pressed his face against my cheek.
Tyler’s body temperature was always a degree higher than mine. I usually felt he was burning hot, and in Summer, I would push him away when he tried to hug me.
But today, his body was cold as ice.
The words of accusation I had prepared melted away.
“Tyler, can you tell me exactly what happened? What’s the truth behind all this?”
Tyler nodded.
“Three years ago, your last phone call was to me.”
Tyler explained that we weren’t completely disconnected. During those years in New York, my life
had been miserable. I frequently went to the hospital for illnesses and injuries.
Chapter 10
That’s where we reconnected.
As former classmates meeting by chance, I saw Tyler as my lifeline. Whenever I faced humiliation
or felt unwell, I would confide in him.
Tyler sympathized deeply with my situation and often asked me:
“Victoria, are you happy?”
I would shake my head.
“No, I’m not happy.”
He would hold my hand compassionately.
“Then why not try a different life?”
I pulled my hand back as if stung.
“Leaving Jackson would make me even more unhappy.”
I understood Tyler’s suggestion and stopped contacting him after that.
Until March 29th, my birthday.
I called Tyler, my voice eerily calm.
“Tyler, I’m so tired.”
But Tyler heard the despair lurking beneath the surface calm.
“Victoria, where are you?”
“If I could do it all over again, I wish I had never met him.”
With those words, I stepped on the gas pedal.
