It’s exclusively to the single, unmated males and females.
Thankfully, my parents won’t be attending. My little brother won’t either as he’s too young to participate in such thing I ex a little relieved after knowing that, especially after the last event that was in this pack house.
The days pass by quick with preparations for the mating ball. The list of people coming to attend the pack is s From the guest’s, to the food and other arrangements. Every day is harder and I sometimes feel

The day before the ball, I’m dead tired. My back and leg is aching like hell
I continued with my trainings over the week and managed to shift at least over a hundred times. Elisha told me that I wa doing well, far better than what I did in the beginning.
My legs still feel like they’ll buckle beneath me and collapse. I feel fatigued, like there is no energy leh in my body hanging on a threadbare to life.
“Are all the names on the list checked?” Ethel asks me
I slip the papers to her and nod, “I double checked all the names. Nothing is missing
“You sure of that?”
“Yes,” It’s a list of people who’ll be attending and it has to be given over to the security team. Im certain.”
“Good, good.” She takes the pages from me and goes through them once by herself. “Lot more than I expected”

the task of confirming the guest list on my own. Ethel was a little hesitant to give it to me first but then, with all the work she had to do, she eventually allowed me to handle it.

And he wast
Which I’m thankful for.
His name isn’t on the list and neither is anyone else from his pack.

“Great. I’ll give this over to the security,” she bundles up all the papers and lines them together. “What about you? What you
have next to do!”
“Oh. I wasn’t going to do anything. Dinner isn’t until another hour so I was thinking to taking–taking a small run,” I say, a little hesitantly. “It’s just I’ve been doing a lot better and faster than I did on my first day. So I thought of practising a little since I won’t be doing it for the next few days, until the guests are gone.”
Ethel gives me a look and I don’t know what it’s about. “Okay. But just be back in an hour. I’ll give the instructions for ball tomorrow by seven and 1 better see you back here.”
“I will be.”
I shuffle off fast and head out. There aren’t many wolves out today, considering tomorrow there’s a huge ball being hosted at the pack house. I walk toward a bench by the pond and sit down on it. The little, tiny fish moves up and flutter around in the cool water. It’s quite cold as we’ve already fallen into the winter month, yet the snow won’t fall just yet.
I take off my shoes and my shirt, preparing myself for the shift.
It’s more in your mind than in your body. I remember Elisha’s words.
I imagine my wolf from head to toe and change. Nothing has ever hurt so bad before. It was all pins and needles cutting into my skin. Like someone pushed through me and tried to scrape out my organs. It was slow and painful. Very, very painful. No matter how many times I’ve done it, it’s still painful.
As my small form takes in shape, I steady my heart. My insides are a complete mess. Part of me tells me to stop this but I ignore that. This is what I need to work on, something to make me push through the pain.
I shift and immediately, I start moving across the lush, green grass. Running my paws fast and sharp. I’ve covered this track and this same distance at least twenty times. It’s part of training with Elisha.
Which I’m so grateful for.
My speed starts to increase and I try not to focus on the uncomfortable shifting of my bones and tendons. A loud howl releases from the back of my throat. It’s shrill, a little broken. For a moment, I think it’s stuck in the space between my ear canal and head. But it isn’t I’m just surprised that I am doing this.
It feels good to be a little faster than I was yesterday. Just when I’m gaining confidence, a low sound rumbles over from where I’ve come from. It’s so low that I could have missed it if I had been a second faster. My heart freezes and everything in
me turns to ice.
Before I know it, a large brown wolf lands on top of me, sending me straight to the ground.
My heart pounds as I struggle against the weight of the other wolf, but it’s useless. He’s ten times bigger than me and his paws feel like claws and teeth all over my body.
I’m pinned with my face on the ground, crushed and helpless.
I instantly recognize the scent that mingles with mine.

Chapter 21
It’s Ezra
He gets off me and just as I get up from the ground, another wolf tackles me. My body slams hard, smashing to the ground and crunching a few bones along the way.
1 yowl in pain as blood pools in my mouth and my feet and palms press up against the soft grass trying to claw for strength. But it’s all the pointless, he isn’t leaving
The weight on me is so crushing. 1 barely have any breath at all. I’m pinned on my side, my teeth slightly bared but not aimed to the intruder. With every slight movement my pawes make, the woll on me presses his sharp claws deeper into my stomach and I still
He moves after a moment and lines up against Erra, their nostrils are flared and their breaths ragged. Their eyes glow gold as they both have different plans in their minds.
They lean down and I start shivering again. They snarl low, before they turn and fly toward me. I recoil, curling up into a ball. Their paws crashing on top of me, each kick and hit feeling like a hammer crashing down into my bones. It crushes and snaps apart a piece of me, putting pressure on my weak spots.
I howl and it’s silent and lost, before the two wolves stop their advance and I look up in fright.
They shift back and the other tall young man beside Ezra is revealed is no other than Samuel.
“Oh, look at yourself. You are far smaller than I expected.” Ezra narrows his eyes at me, before giving Samuel a nudge with his foot. “Why do runts exist? They make me sick.
Samuel leers at me before laughing and saying, “Seriously, I’ve never seen such a scrawny thing in my life.”
The smile is all too bright on their faces.
“Come on now, runt. You can shift back. Let us take a look at you” Ezra says to me as I lay completely silent.
I don’t move a muscle or a single centimetre at all. My entire body aches
“Shift, Samuel demands before snapping his finger. “Quick before we force you too.”
I try to move backward but I can’t escape. Can I? And even if I do, they are going to come after me.
Just as the thought seeps through my mind, Ezra laughs sharply and says, “Don’t even think of escaping. There are nowhere to run or hide for you. It’s easier for you to follow through.”
I look away from the direction and breathe in deeply.
Ezra clicks his tongue before leaning close. I hold my breath back and start with the shift. Immediately, I hate this idea. It’s painful to do that, far more than ever. My bones feel like they have been broken and pulverized. Each cut on my skin and the bruise on it too. It hurts me, burning through my soul.
Finally, it ends and I’m back in my skin.
They offer no helps whatsoever to me. I try to keep my dignity intact and remain on the ground, on my stomach, naked. My hair covers my back, covering what it can, but it’s not enough.
I know it’s not enough.
The two of them chuckle while eying me up and down. My hair, everything about me, everything is out and exposed. They don’t move or say anything and I hope they would just leave.
But they won’t.

Ezra grabs a lock of my long, messy hair and he tugs it lightly. Pain spasms through me and I couldn’t stop it.
Hon. The hum vibrates through the back of his throat. His brown hair slightly comes apart as the cool wind comes from the lake. “You might be an ugly worthless runt but that body isn’t too bad.”
