“It’s only rumors, but some lands up north possess magic powers.
That sounds utterly ridiculous, even when I’ve just heard it.

But Elias looks at me like it’s the truth like this makes so much sense to him. I remain silent, trying to wrap my head around these so–called powers. Magic.
“This–these lands are rare, a resource of sorts, given from nature, from the gods. It isn’t easy to locate and acquire. From the knowledge I’ve learned, some lands are breeding grounds for these powers, places where shifters can harness strength and energy from the mystical spirits of the land itself.”
Elias tips his chin up, the ends of his beard brushing the collar of his coat. “Therefore, packs will fight with one another to obtain the lands and claim it for their own. It’s no surprise why the alpha of the Nighthowl would want such a land in his possession”
I don’t believe it one bit. I don’t think that certain lands hold that sort of power. But this is about something other than whether there are lands with magical powers. It’s that Jericho, that low and pathetic wolf, seeks it with his entirety when it’s mine.
“And if it’s true, if the land you hold is indeed filled with such magic, then it makes sense why Jericho’s come after you. Hell, even I would kill for such kind of land and power.”
I glance at Kovas briefly before setting my gaze straight on Elias. “It’s interesting.”
“More than interesting!” Elias chuckles softly. “Well, I shouldn’t keep you occupied here, especially when plenty of females are waiting for you to meet. Perhaps we can continue this in the morning when I’m a little more refreshed. It’s an important topic that requires enough concentration, I dare say.”
“Yes, perhaps that’s for the best.” I pull my lips back, stretching them a little in an effort to not look so emotionless in front of him. “By the way, have you ever had a mating ball? Why exactly decide to throw one now?”
“It was a spur–of–the–moment decision. I’m growing older–I need an heir.”
I can’t argue against that. He has lived a solitary life for a long time now, and it’s a little overdue for him to take a mate and continue his bloodline.
When he walks away and attends to other guests in the room, I turn to see Kovas waiting patiently. He tilts his head but doesn’t say anything to me.
“I think killing Jericho would certainly solve everything,” I say, meeting his eyes. “Once we leave from here, write to him, tell him I’m willing to make an offer for the land. Send five of my finest warriors over to his territory, his compound with a sham offer and ensure they bring back his head. Do that tonight. By the week’s end, he should be dead.”
Kovas flips up his brows, “You want to kill him?”
“I do,” I sip on the cold champagne and feel that urge simmer right below the surface of my skin. “Do you have a problem?”
His eyes flick back and forth like he’s contemplating whether he should speak or not. “No, not really, Kael.”
I twitch my jaw, feeling a sudden agitation within my body. My thoughts start wandering off, drifting a little too freely in my head, and I’m not doing anything to stop them. The anticipation of fighting becomes a craving, itching at the very surface of my skin.

I take another deep breath, but the feelings still linger.
“We should leave.”
“You don’t want to stay?”
“Not anymore. I finish my glass and set it on the table. “I don’t really enjoy mating balls Females throwing themelims at the and begging to fuck them. I prefer getting right to the point. I can’t do that here. This isn’t my pack”
“You rejected your mate. Is that what’s got you down?” Kovas stares at me, and I nearly growl under my breath. It was a hanty decision. One you can’t take back
“I don’t make mistakes.”
“Right.”
Once we are inside the car, returning back home, a new resolve slips into my mind, and a burning itch awakens within my bones. The air between us is quiet for a moment before Kovas breaks it.
“You were harsh.”
I shift in my seat and look out to see the dark shapes zooming past us. “She was the one. Not a single bit interested in the mating bond I offered her. I’m afraid I didn’t have a choice.”
And it’s true. She didn’t want this bond. What else was I to do? Fight her? Force her to be with me?
She asked me to let her go–so I did.
“You had the choice. Like to be your gentle self. Did you not think for once that she could be intimidated? You are an Alpha of a known powerful pack, and she’s not someone with a lot of choices and, I suppose—a runt. You could’ve been more tolerant with her–more understanding. That wouldn’t have hurt.”
“Neither did that rejection,” I snap back, my jaw clenching. “She outright rejected my letters, turning them down, rejecting everything I had said and done. It was an appropriate solution. She was lucky. She didn’t get handed a more violent response.”
“Do you want her, Kael?”
“Want is an overrated word,” I glare at him in the eyes. “And take my name when you address me. I don’t like being addressed by my wolf.”
He doesn’t take the change lightly, “I’ll address who I’m talking to.”
“You may be my friend, but on certain matters, you should know I’m still Alpha, and I give the orders.”
Our gazes meet again, each of us challenging. But it’s over quicker, without much fuss. “Alright. Let’s get home first, and then we can discuss your strange behavior.”
