Chapter 71
Aron
“A human?” My mother is appalled. It shows on her face. “Among all the choices that you could have chosen, it was a human?” There is clear displeasure in her voice.
自
My sister chuckles beside me, “And I thought I was the black sheep for having that one relation with a foreign wolf. Oh, do you remember the scandal? It wasn’t even that bad. This is so much worse.”
“Leave that,” My mom’s sharp voice snaps at her. Her eyes come to me, then, she says. “Have you lost your mind entirely. Aron? Are you completely insane or is this just a phase?” I think about it, a moment.
“A bit of both, I would say,” I answer honestly with my shoulders straight.
My mom’s face doesn’t fall. The lines between her brows don’t soften. “How did this happen?” she continues, her tone is hard and accusing and very unforgiving.
“It wasn’t intentional. Just sort of happened,” I try to keep my answer short.
There’s no need of telling her or my sister the truth about it all right now. Not when things are just in the middle. If things change, with Rhea, I’ll tell them but until then, that’s all they’re going to know.
“What about her family? Have you told her?” my mom continues to drill. “What kind of background is she from? Is her family human, too? Where are they from? I didn’t see anyone else. Is she here all by herself?”
“She understands.”
As far as her family is concerned, it’s irrelevant, so I keep that to myself.
My mother stares at me, her lips thin. She looks a little mad and shocked.
“You knew this?” She snaps at Kovas this time who has been quiet this whole time.
I told him to keep to himself unless I needed any help. He nods. “It is a bit complicated but he knows what is he is doing. I assure that.”
“Oh,” Her hands go to the sides of her head as she paces back and forth in the living room. “This isn’t good–no, not good at all. I will not allow this to happen. No.”
I cross my leg over the couch, “I’m not really asking.
“You’re being impudent,” She turns and hisses the words out, looking like I had struck a chord inside of her somewhere, something that made her lose that calm and composed aura of hers. “She’s a human. A human. That is no match for you. You’ll never be able to truly bond, you know it—”
“I’m not worried,” It’s true.
“You haven’t thought of this properly, have you? This isn’t the time for mistakes like that. What if you find your true mate? Then what’ll you do about it, hm?” My mom is raging.
She’s also not wrong, but I don’t dwell on the last question for too long. I look at her, my eyes harden a bit.
I already found one.
But she doesn’t know that either.

Chapter 71
“She is not going anywhere.” I’m not letting go.
My mother stops pacing and stands in the center of the room, staring at me. Her eyes search my face. She’s trying to understand, but I doubt she can comprehend much. The last time she was here was a year ago, and now everything has changed. She knows little to nothing
“There’s something you’re keeping from me. Her tone gets deeper. Ir more knowing than it is accusing nowe
She isn’t stupid.
“There is,” I admit.
“Tell us.” Layla speaks up for the first time. “Oh, we’re not going to judge you, brother. She mocks a little with her voice.
1 roll my eyes.
“Perhaps it’s a little personal,” Kovas says before I get a chance to say anything. “You don’t need to know He’ll tell you when it is right. For now, just be calm about this, please?”
My mother looks between us both, trying to pry in with her sharp eyes. She wants answers that we aren’t willing to give yet. I know her patience will wear thin very soon. But as of now, she stays calm.
She lets it go, but not for long, I assume. We talk a little bit more, and we talk a lot of small talk. She tries to bring in the subject again but I brush it away. After that, they excuse themselves and go to sleep in the guests room.
Kovas and I head outside, out of the manor. There are too many ears in the house now, ears that we need to avoid at all
costs.
“Your family is worse than mine,” He laughs.
“Shut up,” I whisper, striding towards the gardens.
“How are we going to go around this?”
“I have a couple ideas,” I murmur.
I stop by the line of trees and watch the manor. I see the window of Rhea’s room, it’s dark, she’s probably asleep.
“Let’s hear it.” He’s more intrigued than I thought.
“The plan will work,” I say and turn around. Kovas raises his brows in confusion. I suppose I’m not being clear enough. I look around and go deeper into the trees. Once we are a good few yards in, I explain the plant to him.
“Eldra told me of its properties. It will bring her wolf back and will bring no harm to her physical body in return. But there’s no assurance of whether her wolf will come back the same. There’s a risk her wolf could be more feral–completely untamed–or worse, reject her.”
Kovas leans against a tree, arms crossed. “Oh, just like you.” he chuckles.
“Not a joke,” I say quietly. It worries me. And Kovas knows it, too. Even though he doesn’t say it aloud, it’s visible. “I like her, like this, the way she is, now and before. I don’t want her to change.” There’s an urge in my voice that I cannot suppress.
He sighs, “Well, unfortunately, we don’t get to pick and choose these kinds of things. If things get rough, you’ll deal with it, and if it fails, which I hope doesn’t happen, then well, you’ll know what to do about it.” He comes to stand in front of me.
“Yeah, you’re right.” I nod, taking a deep breath in.
“What if she doesn’t want to take it?”

Chapter 71
“Take what?”
“Take this plant? The one that would revive her wolf?” He clarifies.
I didn’t think of that.
“She will.”
“You sure about that?”
“I’m certain.”
