Chapter 99
Karl
“The council demands to are you They won’t leave towns until they have, Liam tells me in a low tone, his gaze flicking to my face. Tve informed them that you were injured on the attack earlier and that you’ve taken a few days off
“That’s good”
“Tan I can hold them off only for long enough. You will need to meet with them in the upcoming days or else they won’t leave He glances over the crowel in the bar that’s a little far from the territory, but still close by
I finish my drink and set it over the table.
Just make sure they don’t get any wind of where I’m at 1 warn him.
I don’t need them getting curious.
“Yes, alpha”
The council doesn’t need to know that I’m out of town. They can easily assume I’ve discarded my pack to the side and I’m onto something else. Which I’m not,
Tve sent Henry over to the Redhollow territory to start with the plans we have in place, Liam informs me, “He’s in charge of everything over there as of now. As far as the surrounding lands, they are free lands, and they can be claimed anytime
you want to”
“Good, good” I get up off the barstool and pull my jacket over me. The weather’s not so bad today. It’s not raining, or snowing, so it’s not as cold as it could have been. “We will proceed with that when I come back to town. In the meantime, ensure that the council is kept in the dark. They cannot get any idea of what’s happening, or what will happen.”
“They won’t. I’ll make sure of that. But how much longer are you going to stay out of the town? A few days”
“Yes. A few days. And no more than that” My jaw tightens. “I just need to settle something”
Something being my own mate.
“Yes, Alpiu. I’ll see you tomorrow then: Liam nods his head, his eyes on me.
I leave the bar after that and get back into my car. It’s a long way to the cabin, a two–hour drive. I could cut the time in half by shifting, but that would be a waste of my energy right now. I need it. For the nights.
My eyes narrow as my car pulls up in the drive of the cabin. I see it. There’s light in there, inside. Rhea. I turn off the headlights before parking
Something needs to be done about the council, and it needs to be done before I can take Rhea back to the manor.
If they have any idea of what’s happening, they’ll do everything in their power to destroy me and take everything that I have.
Rhea doesn’t understand that she really needs to
That is why she is here. Until she can assure me that she won’t tell anyone, I cannot let her out anywhere.
Perhaps for a while wouldn’t bring any harm
Of course, it would. She’s a loose end. She needs to stay here and stay put. We cannot let her out and let her ruin what we have been working for–for year

I get out of the car before I’m distracted by my own thoughts. There’s no need to hear Aron right now. He doesn’t understand the risks as I do.
“You’re early. She looks at me from across the couch and says. Her voice is a mere whisper.
“Something wrong with that?”
Her gaze goes back to the book in her lap. “Nothing at all” She’s being curt with her responses to me. Not like I mind, though.
I take a quick look around the calm, taking in everything before heading up the stairs to my room.
It’s been days that she’s here, that I’ve had her here, with me. She’s done nothing, absolutely nothing that would lead me to believe that she would do anything that I wouldn’t like. But at the same time, how can I trust her?
I just can’t
She could be planning something in that little head of hers. Maybe she wants to run away again, like she did earlier, when she escaped from me. And I wouldn’t know of it until it happens.
Fuck.
Once I’m in my room, I take out my phone and call Selina. There have been a few calls of her on my phone already. “Aron. She picks up on the second ring. “What a surprise? I’ve been trying to reach you for days now–and not only me I’ve been a little held up.
“I heard you were injured. Everything alright?” There’s concern in her tone, not that I care about it.
“Yes, I’ve been healing.”
“You sound different,” she notices, her tone a little careful. “Are you alright? Do you need anything?”
“Not really, no, I respond, walking over to the balcony doors. The forest’s silent. I can only see the trees that surround the house. “But I was curious to know what you are doing tomorrow evening.”
“Oh,” She pauses right there. “Do you want to set a meeting with the rest as well? I could arrange that.”
“No, no, Selina, Just you.
“Oh
“If you’re free. She can hear the amusement in my voice as I say the words. I can feel a slight grin curving over my lips when I know I’m getting my way, and that too without even asking for it properly.
“Yes. Yes, I am Her words are quick, She’s interested. “You know I can always make time for you, Aron. But I’m a little concerned. Cade and Alexander have been trying to get a hold of you. We wanted to discuss some matters-
“And that will be for later. Why don’t we meet at Santo’s at six, tomorrow?”
She pauses for a moment before answering, “Alright, yes, that’s good.”
I can tell she’s unsure, but at the same time, she doesn’t want to show that. That’s alright. I don’t really care about that–or her or the council
I want them gone for go

“Sure. See you.”
Before I cut the call, I put the phone away from my ear for a moment and turn around to glance at the door. I don’t need to know that there’s someone standing behind it, listening to everything.
I can sense that
It’s Rhea.
“Tve warned you, haven’t I say, opening the door and looking straight into her wide eyes that are surprised.
She takes a step back, feeling the guilt and the nervousness seeping through her.
“I was–I was coming here to ask you,” She stumbles upon her own words, “Something”
“No, you came here because you wanted to hear. Don’t take me as a fool
“I don’t.”
“Rhea, this isn’t the first time you’ve gone against my commands. She knows I’m talking about her previous eavesdropping habits
She’s going to regret this, I know that.
No.
“Come in.” I tilt my head towards my room. She looks hesitant and scared as her feet carry her inside.
“You were talking to that woman, from the council You’re going to see her tomorrow.” She sounds surprised. “Why?”
“You know it’s not for your concern-“I say as I close the door and turn to face her.
“I’m your mate.”
She’s jealous. It’s surprisingly easy to read that on her expression, and feel that through our connection.
“And what have you done to act like it?” I ask her. “Run away? Deceived me? Rejected me? You questioned even when I marked you.”
There’s no regret on her expression. None at all.
She still hasn’t accepted that she did something wrong. No. She’s not going to.
“You’re not who you were.” She says in a quiet tone. Her eyes are fixed on my own, her lips parting, as if she’s trying to tell me something more, something that I already know. That Aron was more of a better man than I ever could be. “Are you going to sleep with her?” she asks and the words are barely audible, coming out in a whisper.
“Selina?” I take a few steps towards her and stop when I’m right before her. “No. I won’t
And suddenly, there’s a part of me that wants to reassure her. To make sure she doesn’t have the wrong idea. And it’s Aron that’s making me feel that, making the want to do that.
“Then why are you going to see her? she’s confused and it’s showing on her expression.
“For–for something
“Why her?” she’s not convinced.
I take a deep inhale tests

then to my mouth. It makes my chest tighten.

“She’s the weakest among the council members, I take her hands in mine. She’ll tell me what intentions they have. That’s all. I won’t sleep with her. The words come out in a soft, low murmur. I pull her a bit closer and lean down, letting my lips brush over her forehead. Trust me.” I whisper, “Okay? Trust that I won’t
I want her to trust me, I realize.
“Okay, she whispers back. I hear her swallow, hand. “I do”
Fuck.
It’s getting to me, her proximity. I can’t think clearly. It feels like I’m slipping.
I can’t let this happen right now. There’s no need for Aron to surface.
He can’t be here.
Not yet.
I move my hands away from her and take a step back.
“Go, Rhea, I tell her, now stumbling on my own words. “Go sleep.”
“I’m not sleepy-
