Chapter 123: Mate
Rhea

It’s not always easy to tell someone something that’s completely unbelievable and sounds insane, impossible. Something that should’ve never happened. Like the fact my mate, the true one, the one fate actually chose for me, is standing in front of me.
While the one I had spent the last year bound to, marked by, consumed by, had actually stolen my life, twisting it in ways that worked for him and making everyone believe I was nothing more than a runt when I never was.
I was always more than a runt.
It’s no wonder why Aron used to not care about the fact that I was one–because he made me into one.
“…and then she was there, a split of me. Just there. Hidden. I don’t know how many years ago this happened or how long she has been there.” I pause, struggling to take a breath. My fingers fumble with each other, trying not to break. “Kovas told me the truth when I left there. After that, I kept running as far north as I could. I met a witch, the same one that helped me bury Kael for a while. Though, I suppose that didn’t really work for long.”
I’m not just telling him about myself, but about Aron as well. Information that he never wanted anyone to know. Anyone at
all.
About his wolf, the way he takes control, the way he becomes stronger and more vicious when it happens.
“So, you’re telling me there are times when Aron isn’t even conscious, isn’t in his own state of mind?” Cade asks me.
I nod, moving a little over on the bench.
Cade sighs and leans back, crossing his arms over his chest while looking straight ahead.
“I knew something was off,” he mutters. “The way he took down Alpha Elias, how quickly he was gaining control of northern territories–none of it was natural.” His eyes snap back to me, piercing. “But this? This means he’s more dangerous than we thought.”
I swallow hard. “I know.”
“Do you know of his plans?”
“He wants to become the Alpha of the north. He doesn’t want any other territories or any other alphas here,” I say simply, not even hesitating for a moment even when I should be.
If this reaches Aron, he’ll be far angrier than ever at me for letting his secret out in the open.
“That is a mad plan…”
I shift again on the bench, wrapping my arms around myself. It’s getting too cold out here even when I’m layered in clothes. I’ve been here for a while now, just outside of the house, talking to Cade.
“How did you reach here?” he asks me, curiosity etched in his tone. “That too alive?”
I shrug. “The witch told me to go here. I kept on running for as long as I could. My wolf didn’t give up on me. More than anything, it was trying to get away from Aron.”
“And you did.”

I turn to him, a little fear clawing up my throat. “He can’t know that I’m here. If he does, he’ll take me, and I don’t know what he might do with me this time.”
“This time?”
“I’ve run before from him,” I confess, not sure if I should be saying that to a council wolf,
His jaw tenses a little, and so do his arms.
“I won’t tell anyone. Neither will the wolves that I’ve brought here. They work for the council, and they won’t say a word about this,” he tells me and then continues after a small pause, “And you’re my mate.”
I heave in a breath, feeling a shiver go through me. Not just because he mentioned that word, but also because it’s the first time that he’s spoken it, and acknowledged what we are. He can feel the mate bond, and so can I.
“I am,” I whisper, looking down. “But right now, I–I just need to be here, by myself.”
He nods and leans back a bit. “I know. I understand. But I can’t really leave you here alone.”
“I’ll be fine.”
His eyes flicker over my body like he’s trying to assess me, the situation, and how well it is. But then, he stops, just like that, like he’s got an idea or a way to convince me.
“You can stay at the Council Headquarters. He won’t come here, and I give you my word that no one from the council will speak of your presence there,” he suggests quickly.
I swallow, and then I shake my
“I don’t-”
head.
“You won’t be safe here, Rhea.” He doesn’t let me speak. “Once Aron has taken the Greshire land and pack, the very next thing he’ll do is come looking for you. He will do everything in his power to get you if you’re telling me that the only reason he has his immense strength is because of the connection he has to you. He won’t let you go. Ever.” The last word comes out dark, a little angry.
I lick my dry lips, unable to do anything. He’s right. Aron won’t let me go. He’ll keep searching, and he’ll keep looking for me until he finds me, and the next time he does that, I’m certain that I won’t ever see the daylight again.
“I need you to trust me on this,” Cade continues in a soft tone now. “The council will help you, and so will I. We’ll shelter you, and we will stop Aron before it gets any worse.” His hand reaches out, almost touching my shoulder, and then he pulls it back like he realizes something.
He doesn’t want to scare me.
“Stop him?” I raise my brow.
“Yes. It will take a while, but we will put an end to it, and once we have done that, you won’t have to be afraid. Not of Aron or his wolf.” His voice remains low like he means what he’s saying.
“But-“I hesitate because something inside me continues to clench and ache when I think of him. “He’s too strong and ruthless.”
Cade gets up from the bench, and I do too, at the same time. He turns to me, towering over my height.
“He’s not strong. Now that we know that it is his wolf that is strong and in control, we can easily put an end to him.”
“End?”
