CHAPTER 126 What Have You Done?

“Isn’t this what you wanted?” Kovas asks as he sees the northern map spread on the table. “You’ve control of all the strong packs in the north, yet you look like it’s not enough.”
I pace back and forth within my office. The victory should taste sweet on my tongue, but it’s bitter. Something inside me stirs constantly, growing more and more frustrated.
“The wolves I’ve sent south have returned,” I tell him, and he waits for me to continue. “They didn’t find her there or anywhere around that fucking land.”
Kovas shifts on his seat while looking up at me.
“Perhaps she has gone somewhere even further.”
“There’s nothing further. She doesn’t know anyone, and her family states that they haven’t seen her.”
My teeth clench, and my hands, at my sides, curl into fists.
“I can sense her,” I almost growl, “She’s alive. But I can’t–I fucking reach her since she severed the bond.”
The hollowness and the ache still remain, reminding me of what I’ve done, of what she has done. I didn’t want to her. I just wanted her, but all she wanted to do was run away from me.
I can tell she thinks of me as a monster incapable of anything. But I am far from that. Or at least I tried to be with her.
Kovas clears her throat. “Maybe let her be gone for a while. If she has to come back, she will, won’t she?”
I shake my head upon hearing that. My anger on?
“There’s no point if she’s not here with me.”
“You still have your strength.”

“That’s not what I’m talking about,” I snap at him. “She’s more than just the source of my power. I need her to be with me.”
“You can’t force her to.”
I glance at him with a hard look. I already know he played some part in revealing the truth to Rhea, but there’s no proof of it, and he won’t spill it.
There’s no one else who knew about it.
Just him.
And no one can.
The buzzing of my phone shifts my attention. I turn around and glance at it over my table. Selina. My brows furrow Kovas watches me, but he doesn’t see the caller ID.
“I’ve to take this,” I say, picking up the phone. “I’ll see you in the evening when the rest of the wolves have returned from the
Greshire lands.”
Kovas nods and stands up. He heads out of the office while I take my seat and sit down with my phone in my
hand.

There’s no reason for Selina to call me, but I’ve got to pick it up. She has insider information at the Council, and if I ignore her calls, she won’t report anything useful again.
“Hello,” I say, picking up even when I don’t want to, but I’ve to entertain her. “It’s been a while.”
“Oh, yes, it has. Quite a while, Aron.”
“Everything good?”
She pauses, and I hear her swallow, “Well, I don’t know how I can tell you about this.”
“Like you always do.”
“It might not be easy, and I’m not sure if it is right to even inform you about this, but…” she trails off again. “You should know this.”
“I know the council’s after me. I’ve prepared for their attack.” I tell her.
It’s impossible that the Council will let me have all the northern pack territories without paying anything. There are repercussions and consequences to what I’m doing. But I’m ready to face it. Whatever they’ve planned.
What power I’ve now cannot be taken, not by the Council and not by anyone else.
“It’s not about that. Well, it is about them as well, but it’s also about something else.”
“You’re keeping me on the edge.
“Your mate is here.”
My blood turns to ice. For a moment, I don’t breathe. The world around me narrows down to those four words. She’s there. She’s with them.
“What did you say?”
“Rhea,” Selina pauses, “She’s here, with the Council. Cade bought her here after informing us about your doings. The Council was also informed about your wolf and the part where you have taken help of a witch throughout your years of ruling. None of it is a secret anymore.”
I grip the phone so tightly that it might just snap. Everything around me turns red, absolute red.
“Cade?” I say, low and slow, and I know she hears the anger. “The Councilman?”
“Yes.”
“He brought here–from where?”
“I’m not sure. They travelled together from somewhere north and arrived a few days ago. She continues, giving me everything that I need.
Rhea, she was north. Not here. Somewhere even behind. And that man, he was with her.
My blood boils.
Cade.
She knows that I’m not her true mate, and she’d never dare to do anything with another wolf, with another male unless, of
course, he was her mate.
All this time–right in front of my eyes.

But the bigger betrayal is that she has told the Council about me, about what she knows, about what I confided in her, and she revealed my secrets to them.
My teeth clench, I don’t see straight. At all.
“She’s agreed to work with us, Aron. In a way that’s going to bring you down. The Council’s planning on either taking your territories or destroying you–I’m not sure about that yet as it hasn’t been discussed.”
My wolf roars within.
I barely listen to Selina. Because all I can see is Rhea, her eyes, her mouth, her body pressed against someone who isn’t me. All I can see if someone else marking her, claiming her as theirs.
My anger only further.
“Aron?” Selina calls out my name. “Aron? Are you still there?”
I hang up.
I can’t stand this any longer.
I won’t be able to.
Something inside me snaps.
If they think that can keep Rhea with themselves, then they’re mistaken.
