Chapter 128
CHAPTER 128 When the Alpha Comes for You
RHEA
A week later.
The meeting has already been set, and Aron has agreed to show up.
He was given the choice to come to the grounds and negotiate the peace deal that the council had developed. It was simple: he had to surrender all the lands of the north, keep only the BloodClaw territory as his, and he’d be free.
It’s more than a good offer.
I’m pacing in my room as the sun begins to rise in the distance, painting the sky a shade of orange. The curtains have been pulled aside, and I can’t stop staring out the window, at the sunlight, and wondering how today is going to go. Whether he’s going to agree or if it will lead to something even worse.
I hope he agrees, I think. If he doesn’t, then the only other way will be to use witchcraft to sever his wolf, and that would mean more pain. And I can’t imagine that for him.
My wolf stirs in my chest, uneasy, anxious.
I bite my lip and keep pacing, back and forth.
A knock lands on my door, making me turn and stare at it for a long moment before reaching for the handle and opening it.
On the other side of the door, Cade is waiting for me. His eyes are dark and deep, his gaze searching, questioning. He doesn’t look like the usual council member. Today he’s dressed in all black, and there’s a hardness to him, a determination. I know he’ll be at the temple grounds with the warriors and the other councilmen.
“I wanted to check on you before I left with the others,” he says quietly, and I take that as my cue to invite him in. “They’re getting ready. It’s only a few hours now. We’re going to be there early to ensure all preparations. Aron is already on the move, from what our sources are saying. He’ll arrive in a few hours, mostly before afternoon.” He updates, his hands resting on the back of a sofa. “Are you alright?”
My fingers curl and uncurl, but I can’t hide the fact that my palms are sweating or that my heart is beating so fast.
“I don’t know,” I tell him.
“There’s nothing to worry about.”
“Not–not like that. I’m not worried about myself,” I shake my head. “But him. And his wolf. Kael is cruel, and he is brutal. He will not like being forced into this.”
“Maybe. Maybe not. We don’t know what he’s going to do. The fact that he’s even showing up for this says something. He knows that if he doesn’t take the deal, then his pack, his lands, will be at stake, and the council will do far worse. That’s not what any Alpha would want.” Cade continues to look at me.
“Right.”
“The warriors that are going with us today are some of the strongest in our group.” He walks around the sofa and comes to me. “And there are some here as well. Just in case.” His hands come to my arms, and he looks down at me.
I narrow my eyes to the ground for a second before glancing up at him. “Just in case?”
“I’m being careful,” he explains.

“Okay.” I look down at the way his fingers are resting on my arms. They’re soft and warm, comforting, and yet something inside my wolf makes my heart race. She’s uneasy with this, and she doesn’t know why.
He lets go and steps away from me.
“I’ve to get head down and check on everything before we leave,” Cade says. “But before I leave, I want you to know that you’re not alone. And if you feel scared or if you want someone to be with you, the Head Councilman has asked Selina to be with you today.”
My gaze shoots to his, my brows furrowed.
“What? Selina? Why? I don’t want to be anywhere near her.” My words come out sharp and quick.
He chuckles at my expression. “I know, and it was my idea to ask someone else, but she volunteered, she wants to help out And she’s the only woman on the council.”
“I’ll be fine.”
He pauses. “I know. But she’s also bringing you some stuff that might help in calming your mind–books and some things to eat or cook,” Cade adds. “She’ll come here shortly, but if you still feel like it’s too much, tell her, and I’m sure she will respect that.”
“Okay.”
“Take care, Rhea,” he says, stepping out of the room and closing the door behind him.
And then it’s quiet once again. Only my breathing and the clock ticking in my room can be heard. I pace for a while, restless, and then I sit down, staring at my hands, thinking, worrying. About Kael, about his wolf. About the way he’ll react.
I can’t seem to sit for long, though. I stand again and resume my pacing.
Time stretches and bends, each minute feeling like an eternity.
After some time, there’s a knock on the door once again. It must be Selina, but it’s not her. Not yet. There’s a woman, I believe the housekeeper, who brings me something to eat and drink.
I take the food, but I’m not hungry.
I set the tray on the table near the bed and resume.
A part of me should head downstairs, out of my room and outside. To get updates, to get information, but another part of me just wants to stay here until it’s over and when I get the news of how things went. I can’t decide which one is the better option. Which one is easier.
I look up at the time, and it’s almost 12:00 now. My stomach sinks. Kael must be close to the grounds. He must be there, expecting me but instead getting something else. He’ll be furious, angry, and hurt.
Moon Goddess, he will not agree.
Another knock, and I expect to see Selina, but once again, there’s a man, a warrior, standing outside the room.
“The meeting has been delayed,” he says to me. “Councilman Cade wanted me to inform you of any changes that might take place, and I have to inform you that Alpha Aron hasn’t reached the temple grounds. It is delayed.”
I frown. “How long?”
“We do not know yet, but once we do, I’ll let you know.”
“Okay,” I say, swallowing.

This can only mean that he’s taking his time and the fact that the Council doesn’t know when he’ll be arriving is worrisome,
I head toward the bed and the food tray, sit down and then take a bite of the food, I don’t like it, but my stomach rumbles, It’s delicious, just that I’m nervous. Very nervous.
I continue to eat until I hear the door of my room open. It’s loud, a creak. My grip tightens around the fork as I turn toward the source. My breath stalls in my throat the moment the air shifts in the room.
Standing up, I start heading toward the door on the other side of the room. A small hallway blocks me from seeing who it is right away. I brace myself, half expecting to see the man from carlier or maybe Selina.
But it’s not either of them.
It’s Aron.
