The Silent 424

The Silent 424

424.Chapter 424

Sophie dragged the wooden box out from under Dylan’s bed

As she pulled it out, the coins inside jingled noisily, the sound sparking a flicker of excitement in her heart. When she opened the box and saw it stuffed full of strings of copper coins, her eyes lit up with delight So, this is where he’s been hiding his stash, she muttered, a sly grin creeping onto her face Looking at the overflowing box, Sophie couldn’t help but feel a surge of joy. This was exactly what she needed. She had been fretting over her lack of funds, but now that Dylan had this much money, it might as well be hers After all, it was only a matter of time before she dragged Dylan back home where he belonged

Let’s see just how much my dear brother has saved up, she said, her tone laced with mockery

Without hesitation, she tipped the box over, spilling the strings of coins onto the floor in a noisy cascade

The neatly tied strings of copper coins didn’t interest her at all. She dug through the pile with both hands, her movements growing more frantic by the second

But after rummaging through the heap several times, she realized with a sinking feeling that it was all just copper coins Her grin vanished in an instant

She thought, What the hell? A box this big, and it’s nothing but copper coins?”

Sophie had been so sure there’d be silver, maybe even some banknotes tucked away. However, it was just copper coins. She thought. Was Dylan seriously living like a pauper with this pathetic excuse for savings

Fuming. Sophie grabbed a string of coins and hurled it at the wooden box with all her might

The sharp clatter echoed through the still night, loud enough to immediately catch Matthew’s attention outside. What’s wrong, Sophie? Did something happen?”

Hearing Matthew’s hurried footsteps approaching outside the door, Sophie snapped back to her senses and quickly called out, No, it’s nothing! Don’t come in, Matthew! I just slipped while changing clothes.”

Hearing that she was changing clothes, Matthew naturally hesitated and didn’t push the door open

Standing outside, he asked worriedly, Are you sure you’re okay? Did you hurt yourself badly? Should I call for a doctor?”

A doctor? With what money?Sophie thought, rolling her eyes since he couldn’t see her expression

But she kept her tone sweet and replied, No need, Matthew. I’m fine, really. It’s not serious.”

Just as she finished speaking, an idea struck her like lightning. Her eyes lit up, and she suddenly gasped, clutching her foot as if in pain. Wait, Matthew! My foot might actually be worse than I thought!”

Matthew, who had just started to relax, tensed up again at her sudden change of tone. What? Are you sure it’s not a fracture?”

I don’t think it’s a fracture,Sophie replied, feigning a wince. But I might’ve twisted it. It hurts whenever I try to put weight

on it.”

Sophie almost wanted to pat herself on the back

She thought, I am a genius, if my foot was injured, I wouldn’t be able to walk

And there is no way Dylan would be heartless enough to kick me out when I am hurt

If he dared, Matthew would definitely stand up to him

Dylan might act cold, but he still had some brotherly affection for Matthew, If Matthew really pushed back, Dylan would have no choice but to relent

By tomorrow, everything would fall perfectly into place for Sophie

A sly smile crept across Sophie’s face as the idea took shape

Her eyes drifted down to her foot

This wasn’t enough yet

en if it wasn’t an actual sprain, it

If she wanted Dylan and Matthew to fall for it, she needed to make the injury look real. Even had to be convincing enough to fool them

With that thought, Sophie gritted her teeth, her gaze sauny un we wouden box. A flash of ruthless determination flickered in her eyes

Outside, Matthew was growing increasingly frantic. Sophie had gone quiet for too long after her last words, and he couldn’t help but call out, Sophie, are you okay? Is it really bad? If it hurts that much, I’ll take you to the doctor right now!”

424 Chapter 424

Just as Matthew was about to lose his mind with worry, a sharp scream pierced the air from inside the hut

This was followed by a loud crash, as if something heavy had hit the ground

The next moment, Matthew heard Sophie’s wailing cries. It hurts! It hurts so much, Matthew! My foot is killing met

Without a second thought, Matthew slammed the door open and rushed inside

The sight that greeted him was Sophie sprawled on the floor, clutching her foot and sobbing pitifully

“MatthewSophie called out softly, afraid he might back out. She urged him with her pitiful gaze

Matthew’s face turned pale as he hurried to her side. What happened? How did you hurt yourself this badly?”

By now, Sophie’s foot had already swollen up alarmingly, the redness making it look particularly severe

She hadn’t held back. She had smashed the wooden box against her foot with all her strength. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have swelled so quickly

Completely unaware of this, Matthew anxiously asked, What happened?

Through her tears, Sophie sobbed, I was just trying to get dressed, but I accidentally kicked something under Dylan’s bed again. It made my foot worse, and I even broke Dylan’s box! What do I do, Matthew? Do you think Dylan will be mad at me?”

Hearing this, Matthew finally noticed the wooden box,and the empty space inside it

Dylan had no idea what was happening back at the thatched cottage

He sat alone at the entrance of Saint Grace Nunnery, staring up at the starry night sky, his mind wandering. He remembered how Sophie used to sit with him under a sky like this, back when he was ten years old
