CHAPTER 162: The Slow Descend

CHAPTER 162: The Slow Descend

RHEA

The wheel screeches as I move across the gravel path that gets me out of this territory and onto the main highway that’ll take us back. Aron’s in the passenger seat, silent for once, but he’s looking out of the window every few seconds

They’ll know,he mutters finally, There are going to be a hundred wolves after me the second they smell that cell’s empty. A hundred. Trained and rabid wolves. The council won’t let it go.”

I look over at him, It’s fine. We’ll be far from their reach by then.”

It takes a minute before I’m finally on the road

They’ll follow us, Rhea. Wherever I go, they will. And it’s only going to create chaos. He continues, the worry evident in his voice. You should let me go.”

No, not a chance.”

Where did you kill Catelyn?”

What?I look at him, brows furrowed

Where?”

In a small town. It’s not too far from the council grounds.”

Did you bury her?”

The lines in my forehead only grow deeper, No, why would I?”

So you just left her-”

In her house,I nod and then look at the horror on his face. I’m not going to bury her after what she did to me. She killed me. Why would I even care about what happens to her body?”

Because the council will find out about it. Does anyone know about? How did you even find her?The questions, they were too many

No.

Cade,” I spit it out. I told him and he helped me, found her for me.”

Cade?”

It’s not like that.”

He knows you’re alive?

He came to the house. He was suspicious, and I told him about it.I explain, but it’s probably the worst thing I can do because I can feel the heat of his jealousy

He’s going to fucking blabber the moment the council questions him.”

He hasn’t. Not yet.”

When did you tell him?His voice goes deeper

My fingers tighten around the steering wheel. A few weeks ago.My answer is hesitant

Aron shifts in the seat beside me. I glance at him before looking ahead again

He won’t say anything. If he wanted to, he would’ve already, but he hasn’t.”

Doesn’t mean you trust him.”

I don’t.”

After that, he goes silent for a long bit. I keep driving straight. It’s a long way, and it’s going to be a while before the sun rises and all those hundred rabid wolves are going to be en route in the same direction

Then he exhales, roughly, We need to stop somewhere.”

I glance at him, What?”

Rhea,He looks at me, eyes hard, and voice raw. I’m human now. I can’t go on for so long. It’ll be hours before we reach home, and even then, I’ve to arrange some things beforehand

Successfully unlocked

The way he says, human, is so different. It’s fui. of anger and hate. And on the sole reason he’s like this

Okay,I nod quietly, and start thinking. We can stay at your cabin near the Lakewood forest. I can get there in two hours?”

It’s more of a question because I’m not sure if he wants to be there

No. That’s the first place the council will come looking for.”

1/3

CHAPTER 162: The Slow Descend

Right. That is true. The second place will be the Bloodclaw territory and his house. They’re going to demand that from Kovas. And they’ll force him to give in

I can feel the panic rising. It’s starting to get to me. The fear of what might happen, and how it’ll end up

Then?I look over at him. I can keep driving.”

Can you?he questions. You’ve been out all morning and night. You’re exhausted.”

I don’t want him to go back. I need him to help me, to control whatever is happening to me and the way I feel

I’m fine.”

Rhea,He shifts to face me more fully. You’re shaking and you’re covered in blood.”

I glance down at my hands that are around the wheel. I hadn’t even noticed. They’re trembling, small, fast tremors that run up and down my arms

There’s an Inn a few miles further. I know of it. We can go there.”

Are you sure?”

He nods, I’ll give directions.”

And he does. I follow them until we’re near a town, and then through it, until the small Inn that’s on the outskirts comes into view. All I can smell here are humans

Stay inside the car. I’ll go get a room.”

He slips out of the car before I can even protest. I lean back against the seat and watch him walk inside. My eyes are heavy and the weariness is starting to get to me

It’s been a long day, and I’ve been driving all day

And killing…

The little voice in my head says that

I shut it off before it gets to me, before all of it does. Yes, I killed Catelyn, but she deserved it. I’m not going to let that little voice convince me otherwise

But I do need to control it

The violent parts of me that have surfaced

Aron is out a few minutes later. He walks over to my side and opens the door for me

Let’s go.”

I step out of the car, bones stiff, nerves fried. My whole body feels like it’s still in motion, like I’m speeding down the highway even though we’ve stopped

He leads the way to Room 11. The door creaks as he pushes it open

The room is what I expected. Peeling wallpaper, dusty air, one flickering lamp on a scratched old nightstand. And there’s only one bed in the centre. Of course

I’ll have to make a call,Aron says, taking my phone. You should shower. I’ll go down and see if they have some clothes you can change into.”

I nod and reach the bathroom door, but before I open it, I turn once more

Don’t go anywhere far.”

I won’t.He says from the other side of the room

The bathroom is small and the water takes time to heat up. I strip and instantly, the cold air hits me. My clothes drop on the floor in a heap of blood and dust. I don’t know what I should do with them. Probably burn them. That would be best

I step inside the shower and turn it on. The water feels good on my skin, washing away the filth and the blood. My hand moves to my throat once more and I wash all of the blood

I can’t understand why I’m healing so quickly

Even last week, when I had cut myself accidentally in the kitchen while preparing dinner with Marcella, the wound healed within a minute. No scar, no bruise, nothing

And now…

There’s more to this, to all of this, and no one can tell me about it except for Aron. He has to know what’s happening to me, and how I can get better without making it worse, and how to stop it

Because I don’t want to die. I’m not going to let it happen to me again. I don’t want to suffer the way she did

I’ll do everything to prevent that
