CHAPTER 169: Can’t Stop Her
ARON
There’s a silence in the air after the council’s representatives and their wolves have retreated from the pack borders. It’s not a lasting one, not a satisfying one. But I can feel it.
The calm.
It’s temporary. I know it better than anyone else. They’ll always have an ace up the Bleeve to get their way, to get me. But for the time being, it’s gone, they’re gone.
It’s a few nights after the confrontation, and the moon is full tonight. There’s a soft chill in the air outside, but inside, within my room, I can feel my nerves tightening.
Every instinct in me is on high alert. Something inside me is pacing restlessly.
I pause at the window, staring out at the darkened garden and the forest that meets. That’s when it hits me, a scent so potent it nearly drops me to my knees.
“Fuck, I mutter, gripping the window ledge tightly as it comes again.
I can’t tell what it is, or where it’s coming from, but it’s calling to the part of me that surely was meant to die.
I can feel him rising, Kael, clawing his way closer to the surface with every inhale I take. It takes me a moment to get hold of my senses and pull back. I’ve got to put a stop to this.
Whatever is calling to him, to my wolf, I’ve got to end it.
I turn away from the window and step toward the door. The scent grows stronger, and my body reacts before my mind catches up, cock hardening, aching painfully.
No.
Something even darker stirs.
Rhea. She’s in heat.
Her scent surrounds me, calls to me, makes me ache. Makes my blood boil in the worst of ways. Makes me want her. All of her. Everything about her.
I need to stay away from her. I have to stay away.
Down the hall, I hear her door open. My heightened sense picks up her every move, the way she walks down the hallway, the way she’s breathing and the sound of it. Everything.
I turn away and move back inside.
This can’t be happening.
“Aron?” Rhea’s soft, sweet voice comes from behind the closed door.
She knocks.
Once, twice. And then she stops, waiting for an answer.
“I don’t feel so good.” Her voice sounds almost breathless. “Can I come in?”
I shut my eyes tightly before turning to walk toward the door. Fuck. I can barely breathe, I can barely even think. She can’t come in here, she shouldn’t. She needs to go somewhere far, away from me.
“Not right now,” I say through the door.
“But I-”
“It’s better if you’re alone.” I try to keep my voice as calm and soft as possible, not wanting to make her feel bad, or worse. But I’m already slipping. Already loosing control over myself and what’s within.
“Aron,” Her tone changes slightly. She’s close. She’s standing right on the other side of the door. “Please. Something is wrong. I think–I think, it’s happening.”
Fuck.
She knows.
I clench my jaw tightly and step away. She’s making this even more harder for me, harder for herself.
“I can feel her. She’s-” She cuts off with a gasp before I open the door.
When I finally do, the sight of her makes me freeze. Her skin is flushed, in a fine sheen of sweat, and her hair is tangled. Her
pupils are dilated and the sudden need of wanting to taste her on my tongue is almost unbearable.
“You’re in heat,” I manage. “You need to go back to your room, Rhea. And rest.”

“Why?” She steps closer to me. “We’ve been through this before. You’ve helped me through it”
“Things aren’t the same as they used to be “I try to make her understand. But I know, I see it in her eyes, she won’t
“Aron-
I’m different now‘ 1 cut her and take a deep breath. I can feel her everywhere around me, even when I step away, putting space between us.
The remains of my wolf stir, restless and pacing inside of me. He wants to surface. He wants to claim. He wants her.
Rhea doesn’t miss my reaction, my movement. “What aren’t you telling me?
“Nothing I just think we need to be careful.”
“Careful? I’ve tned everything, but I’m dying inside.” Her hand moves over her stomach, to the lower region, and she grips the night robe tightly “I need you. Only you. You know how it is. It’s burning through me. Her words are strained and her eyes, fuck Her eyes are the worst of it.
Please, Aron. Help me.”
I feel myself weakening, my resistance fading. “I can’t.”
“Why not?” She questions
I don’t want her to know.
“Just I stop “Go rest. I’ll speak with Marcella, she must’ve something to ease the heat. Maybe something to help you.” “Or you can.” She’s already on the bed, on the edge of it. Her hand reaches out and her fingers wrap around my arm. She tugs, and I follow. I can’t seem to stop myself from moving forward.
“Please” She whispers again, her other hand going to the sash on her night robe. She pulls on it and the robe slips open. Underneath it is her naked form. My gaze lowers, tracing the line of her collarbone to her chest. My mouth dries.
The scent hits me harder, the smell of her need, the wetness that’s glistening on the inside of her thighs.
Her eyes meet mine as she lies down, her back arching slightly and her hand trailing down her body. I know what she
wants.
I’ve seen this before. I’ve seen her before.
And now she needs me more than anything, she wants me.
But if I have her, there’s a part of me that I’ll never be able to control again. Kael will rise and he’ll be more feral than ever. It’ll be the end.
I take a deep breath, trying to control my breathing and my mind.
“I can’t,” I force myself to speak again.
“Why?” Her fingers are at her stomach again, and she draws patterns with her finger on her skin.
“Rhea, stop.” I order her.
Her hand pauses and she looks at me. “Why? Don’t do this to me, Aron. Don’t leave me like this. You promised you would never.”
