Gabriel, who had always presented himself as a cultured and refined man, could no longer keep up the facade. His face flushed red in anger, especially on the side his son had punched earlier. Bruised and swollen, he looked a far cry from the charming man he used to be.
“Your Majesty, even so, there are plenty of people in this world who look alike,” Gabriel argued. “While this boy does bear a strong resemblance to me, there are differences upon closer look at his features. Those eyes, his nose-”
“Enough,” Eliza interrupted sharply. She tilted her head slightly, casting a cold, condescending gaze down at Gabriel. She said coolly, “Stick to your lies, and I’ll make sure you can’t back them up.”
Turning to the King, she said respectfully, “Your Majesty, there is one more person outside who can settle this matter once and for all. Summon her, and Rafe’s identity will be proven beyond any doubt.”
“Then summon her,” Magnus commanded without hesitation, not giving Gabriel a
moment to react.
James was a sharp observer. He could tell the King was thoroughly enjoying the spectacle. When Magnus gave the order, he immediately called for the next person.
Meanwhile, Sophie stood outside the hall. She had never imagined she would be summoned by Eliza, of all people.
Just an hour ago, she had been lounging in the Marquis’s estate, sending people to the palace to collect information, when a decree from the Holy Lady arrived, summoning her to the palace.
It didn’t take a genius to figure out it had something to do with Eliza’s plan to change
her last name.
‘What does that have to do with me?‘ Sophie wondered. ‘Does that bitch actually think I’d help her out?‘
Sophie scoffed. She was about to reject the summons when Adeline quickly pulled her aside and said, “Eliza is the Holy Lady now, equal in rank to a princess. You can’t just refuse her summons. If the King thinks we’re disrespecting her, the consequences will be severe.”
Sophie immediately caught her drift. Under normal circumstances, she could have made up a decent excuse. But today, Eliza was clearly in the palace, emboldened by the King’s presence to summon her

over her. And so, she followed the messenger to the palace and waited outside the grand hall.
While waiting, Sophie noticed a young man in front of her, also waiting to be summoned. She could only make out his side profile, but something about him felt oddly familiar. He didn’t turn around. Whatever the feeling was, she couldn’t place it, but it gnawed at her.
Shortly after the boy was summoned inside, it was her turn. She stepped in and gave a curtsy. But the moment the young man turned around and his face came into view, Sophie froze, her eyes widening in disbelief.
“Who are you? Why are you impersonating me?” Sophie snapped. She was so furious that she completely forgot where she was and shouted without thinking.
Sophie hadn’t expected to walk into the hall and come face–to–face with someone who looked exactly like her. ‘No wonder his side profile seemed so familiar. We’re the spitting image of each other,‘ she thought.
A sense of unease surged through Sophie, instinctively making her hostile toward Eliza. She demanded, “Eli–Your Grace, what are you trying to pull?
“You said you wanted to change your last name, but what’s the deal with this guy? Why bring someone who looks exactly like me before His Majesty and all these ministers? Are you trying to humiliate me?”
