Sophie never imagined that her furious outburst at Eliza would inadvertently work in her favor. She had planned to stir up some trouble for Eliza, but everything turned out so different from what she had expected.
Her father, always so powerful and respected in court, now seemed to be losing ground. ‘Isn’t Theodore supposed to be on Father’s side? Why is he speaking up for Eliza?‘ Sophie wondered. ‘And did Eliza just mention an illegitimate child? What does that even mean?‘
A sense of unease settled over Sophie. She looked at the young man standing before her, and at that moment, a wild and absurd thought struck her. “You… Are you also Father’s illegitimate child? Does that make you my twin brother?”
It wasn’t completely far–fetched, considering how much they looked alike and appeared to be the same age.
But Rafe only gave her a dirty look and scoffed. “Who the hell is your brother? We don’t even share the same mother.”
“What did you just-” Before Sophie could finish, Rafe turned his head away and ignored her.
Sophie was so furious that her teeth were clenched so tight it felt like they would snap. ‘Little jerk! He’d better not be my twin brother, or I might just kill him, she thought, her anger boiling over.
In the end, faced with the ministers‘ outrage and condemnation, Gabriel realized there was no way to reverse the situation. The decision for Eliza to change her last name was now officially set in stone.
The King proclaimed, “I have learned that the Holy Lady Serenity, born Eliza Stonor, possesses a heart of unwavering sincerity and a virtue that shines across the land.
“She has served the kingdom with dedication, aiding the country and its people. Her deeds are commendable, and her intentions noble. Now, the Holy Lady petitions to change her last name in honor of her mother’s memory, and considering her contributions, I hereby grant her request.
“From this day forth, the Holy Lady shall renounce the last name Stonor and bear the last name Padilla, inheriting the honor of the Padilla family, continuing its legacy, upholding its name, and spreading its glory. Eliza turned and greeted the man with a smile. “Theodore.”
Theodore stepped forward, his expression complex. He sighed and said, “I once owed the Duke of Mowbay a favor, and because of that, I spoke out of turn and nearly caused you harm. Please forgive me, Your Grace.”
“Don’t worry about it, Theodore. In the end, you still helped me. I understand it was out of respect for my great–grandfather. If anything, I should be the one thanking you,” Eliza replied.
Eliza had learned about Theodore’s connection to her great–grandfather from Nolan. So, no matter what he had said before, she didn’t take it to heart. Besides, she had
given just as good as she got in the heat of that moment.
‘Come to think of it, calling him a traitor might’ve been a bit too much,‘ Eliza thought, feeling embarrassed.
