Chapter 187
ARON
Marcella heads to sleep while I remain by the window, finishing my drink and then setting the glass on the side. The night has settled in. The full moon hangs high, and I’ve this strong desire to shift and run into the forest.
But I’m exhausted.
I leave the glass where it is and move through the hall quietly. It has been a few long days, but it’s over. They’re all gone.
When I reach my room, I open the door and expect Rhea to be inside. But to my surprise, she isn’t there. I look into the closet and then into the
bathroom. Nowhere.
Tension instantly crawls up my spine.
Her disappearance at this time of the night only means one thing: that she has gone somewhere and that she’s in danger, or endangering someone else.
Fuck.
I frown and move around the house. First, checking the lounge and then heading downstairs to check the garden. She’s in neither of these two places.
I go back inside, picking up pace as I check the west wing. Then the second floor. Then the library. She’s not there either.
I pause at the hallway’s end and think for a moment. It clicks instantly.
I know where she is.
Only one place makes sense now.
She hasn’t left the house, she’s still inside, and I know exactly where.
I head for it without thinking, without hesitation, and the moment I step into the hallway of the east wing, the temperature drops.
My eyes fall onto the ground, where I see her. She’s sitting against the wall, near the door that’s locked. Her knees are up to her chest, and her head is
buried between.
“Rhea,” I call her name and then take a sigh of relief. She’s still here. “What are you doing here?”
Her breathing is shallow when she looks up. Her cheeks are stained with tears, and her eyes are bloodshot red.
“What’s wrong?” My tone softens.
There’s something in her hand that she’s holding onto. I can’t see it, but her fist is shut.
“I’m sorry,” she whispers. “I just needed… I don’t know what I needed.”
I move to her, kneeling carefully, making sure not to startle her. “You should’ve come to me.”
“I didn’t want you to see me like this.”
I shake my head and take her hand gently, “I’ve already seen you dead, Rhea. You think this scares me?”
Her eyes drop away, and she takes a deep breath, nodding.
My fingers touch her cheek. Her skin is cold, and she shivers when she feels the warmth of my touch.
“What’s wrong? Tell me.”

I don’t belong here.”
“What are you talking about?” I sit next to her, understanding some part of her problem. “Of course, you do is this because of what Layla said? Don’t listen to her, you belong here. With me. And I’m telling you that myself.”
She shakes her head and leans against the wall.
“She’s going to take over again.”
“Who?”
Rhea stills, her eyes fixed on mine. Her breath halts for a second. My
she’s talking about her…the one inside the room.
“Rhea,” I lean closer. “Nothing’s going to happen.”
“What if something does?”
“What are you saying?”
“What if she comes back?”
“It isn’t possible.” I shake my head. That’s one thing I’m certain about.
“But what if it is?”
moves from her to the door behind her. She isn’t talking about someone else,
My words get stuck somewhere deep inside me because this is something I can’t comprehend.
“I don’t-
Her hand wraps around my arm in a tight way that shows her concern. I take her hand, trying to calm her and these rational thoughts that have come out
of nowhere.
“You’re not thinking clearly, Rhea.”
“I am,” she nods, “I know what’s going to happen. I’m tired of fighting it, Aron. I don’t want to do this. I don’t want to live in fear, I don’t want to be scared
of my own skin, of my own mind, of the next time I wake up and she’s the one breathing instead of me.”
Her hand tightens around mine.
“But it’s not going to happen. It’s not possible, it’s not true.” I repeat myself to her.
She doesn’t get it. The fear in her eyes is so evident that it rattles me to the core. Why would she think that’s possible?
“No, no…”
“Rhea,” I say as she starts turning away from me. “Look at me.”
“You don’t understand-”
I grab her shoulders, keeping her in place and forcing her to look at me. There are a million things in her eyes, but one stands out more than the others:
fear.
“You’re not going anywhere. You’re going to be here. Always. Nothing is going to change. There’s no power in this world that can change what has already happened.”
“But what if it does? You’ll choose her, won’t you?“.
“It won’t happen.”

“Nothing is going to change.” I tell her once more.
But it’s not enough. It’s not what she needs.
“I want him.” She whispers.
Those words hit me straight.
Her fingers curl around the edge of my shirt, and her face remains buried into my neck.
“I want him.”
She’s talking about him. She’s asking for him.
“Rhea-”
“Please,” she pleads, shaking her head. “I need him.” Her voice cracks at the end.
I swallow hard. Every instinct in me screams to let him out. Everything inside me that I’ve been controlling since my return shatters at the sole sound of
her plea.
And suddenly, there’s no control left.
All I can think about is giving her what she needs. Even if it means that I’ve to give up control, and the last bit of restraint that I have left.
So, I do it.
I let him loose.
