Chapter 1
Chapter 1
I was selling my textbooks on eBay when I accidentally added too many zeros to the price tag.
Just as I was about to modify them, a notification popped up–TRANSACTION SUCCESSFULLY!
“Your item has been sold. Price: $1,800,000.”
Shocked, I immediately messaged the buyer and wanted him to apply for a refund.
That’s when I discovered the buyer was none other than Jackson Gray, the son of the richest man in New York.
His response left me speechless.
“Do you have any other items that belonged to Victoria Hawthorne? I’ll pay whatever you’re asking.”
“She was my deceased wife.”
While packing for my move, I cleared out my bookshelf and found a stack of old college prep textbooks.
Living by my “waste not, want not” philosophy, I listed them on eBay, pricing them at $180.
My boyfriend Tyler laughed at my ambition. “Those editions are outdated. They’re basically recycling material at this point. Maybe $1.8 would be more realistic. Seriously, who’s going to pay $180?”
I defended my choice. “My youth has value. I’m not giving these away for nothing.”
Honestly, I wasn’t holding out much hope either.
College graduation was seven years behind me, and high school even further–a decade in the past. The textbooks had gone through several revisions since then. Realistically, only someone collecting paper for recycling would be interested.
But… To my surprise, barely three minutes later, I received a notification:

TRANSACTION SUCCESSFULLY!
Thrilled, I opened the app. The next moment, I was rubbing my eyes in disbelief.
“Sale price: $1,800,000??!”
What on earth? Had I accidentally set the currency to yen or something?
I double–checked my other listings. The dollar sign was definitely there. No mistake.
Then I suddenly remembered… maybe my fingers had trembled while typing the price, and I might have hit extra zeros without noticing.
The buyer must have missed the price too and just clicked “buy” without looking.
I fought back the acid rising in my throat.
Seriously, who buys something without checking the price? How do someone not notice the difference between $180 and $1.8 million?!
And! How did they actually have $1.8 million available in their account?!
I felt like I was about to have a breakdown.
Taking a couple of deep breaths to calm myself, I opened the chat interface and sent the buyer a smiley emoji.
“Sorry, I made a mistake with the price. Could you please request a refund?”
The buyer replied instantly.
“Mistake? What do you mean–you think it’s too low? We can adjust the price.”
I stared at the message. “???”
Had the world gone mad?
Or had the dollar suddenly become worthless overnight? How could anyone think $1.8 million wasn’t enough?
Was this even English? What was this person talking about?

I checked their profile. The profile picture was blank, but the bio contained two familiar words: “Jackson Gray.”
My heart immediately started racing.
