Chapter 4
My phone kept vibrating with messages from Jackson Gray, eager to get my things.
From what he said, his late wife and I not only shared the same name but had very similar handwriting.
What did that mean?
A windfall, that’s what! Incredible fortune!
I jumped up and raced back to my room, pulling out every notebook containing my handwriting.
“Is this page of song lyrics okay?”
“Perfect. What’s your Venmo account? I’ll add you directly.”
I accepted Jackson’s friend request, and he immediately transferred $500,000, saying he wanted the songbook too.
College lecture notes: $1 million.
Handwritten recipes: $600,000.
Reading notes: $800,000.
The stack of books on the table grew higher and higher.
I ran around the apartment wildly, my face contorted, my movements frantic.
I was nearly hysterical.
In just this short time, I’d made over $10 million.
Jackson Gray was spending money like it was monopoly cash.
And he really wasn’t thinking clearly.
Chapter 4
The only similarity between me and Mrs. Gray was our name and handwriting. I even sold him my high school yearbook.
It clearly showed my school and class, enough to prove that I wasn’t the same person as his wife.
He didn’t care.
Seeing my handwriting seemed like clutching at a lifeline for him, as if he could remember her through these items. Wasn’t that what people called sentimental?
No wonder they say only the wealthy can afford to be romantic. The same handwriting was worth this much money to him? Talk about devotion.
I counted the zeros in my account, my thoughts spinning.
To be honest, my financial situation was dire.
A previous hospitalization had cost Tyler a lot of money, though he always said I didn’t need to pay him back.
But we were only dating, and I didn’t want to take advantage of him.
Everyone said I was incredibly lucky to be with Tyler.
He had a PhD from Columbia University and was the youngest associate director in the cardiology department at NewYork–Presbyterian Hospital–accomplished and handsome.
After work, he’d come straight home to cook my favorite meals.
He’d saved for years to buy a well–located apartment and added my name to the deed without hesitation.
The more he did, the more I wanted to give back equally.
With this money, I could buy him everything he liked.
But did this money really belong to me?
Was Jackson Gray drunk? When he sobered up, would he want it back?
I nervously asked him:
Chapter 4
“Mr. Gray, I’ll ship everything to you right away. You won’t change your mind, will you?”
Jackson: “You’re in Harris City?”
“I’m actually in Harris City for meetings this week. No need to ship them. Just give me an address, and I’ll send someone to pick them up.”
“No need! Aren’t you at the Gray Enterprises branch office? I know the address. I’ll bring everything
over.”
After making so much money, I could at least provide this basic service.
Jackson didn’t refuse.
“I’ll be at the office until 10 PM.”
“Great!”
I counted my balance again, then excitedly found a box, packed all the notebooks, and went downstairs to call a taxi.
In the car, I received a call from Brandon Shaw.
“Victoria, princess, I can’t believe that.”
Brandon dramatically accused me of being money–obsessed.
“A few old books for $1.8 million? Change the price back, or I can’t complete this task.”
Brandon was Tyler’s best friend.
I immediately realized that Tyler had asked him to buy my old books behind my back.
It sounds like Brandon is quite sour.
“He just keeps spoiling you. He’s going to ruin you completely. You can’t even set a reasonable price.”
“Don’t tell him about this conversation. He made me promise not to let you know.”
I burst out laughing.
Chapter 4
“Maybe you could take another look.”
“$1.8 million, and it’s already SOLD!”
Gray Enterprises wasn’t far from where I lived. The taxi arrived quickly. While I joked around with Brandon, I told him about the situation.
Of course, I was careful not to mention the additional items–just the $1.8 million part.
Brandon came from a political family and was wealthy himself, so he wouldn’t be jealous over this
amount.
Unexpectedly, a scream came from the other end of the phone.
“Jackson Gray?”
Brandon’s voice betrayed uncontrollable panic.
“Victoria, go home right now!”
“You can’t meet him!”
