I hate Kael. Every inch of me hates him and despises him. But at the same time, there’s no denying that he is my mate.
My true mate, my soulmate.
How can I hate my own mate?
The answer is simple. I cannot. Aron is the one I want to be with–not his mad wolf. The longer he stays in control, the more I’m beginning to hate him.
I’ve been back for a week now, and all of this time has been a torture. A nightmare.
On the evening of a full moon, after dinner, when I’m heading back to my room, he corners me in the hallway and presses his mouth to mine. I can taste the scotch on his lips, and when he pushes his tongue past my lips, I know he has had enough.
“Rhea,” he breathes against my skin. “You’ve been so distant lately…
“I’m tired,” I try to move, but his hand is at the wall, blocking my path. I push at his chest and try to move away, but he only comes closer to me, his body touching my own. My back presses against the wall, my palms against his chest.
“Come to me tonight.” He says, tilting his head, and leaning down.
I look up into his eyes and contemplate. Perhaps this is the best time. My head tilts a little and I ask, “Why?”
“I miss you.” He confesses. His lips brush over mine. “You’re mine and I want you.”
“I want to go for a run.”
He immediately leans back and starts studying me, “At this time?”
“Yes,” I lick my lips and try not to show the nervousness on my face. “It’s been so long since I have. Can we?”
There’s a silence between us for a moment and I can feel my pulse quicken.
“Why not?” His hands come around mine, wrapping tightly. “We can do that. Why don’t you change and I’ll see outside in
ten?”
He’s agreeing…
“Okay.”
With that, he leaves me and heads into his room while I head to mine. I make a quick jump at the phone that’s underneath my pillow and write back to Kovas, who’s waiting for my response.
‘We’ll be there in two hours!
That’s how far the supposed mystical land was from here. It was two hours, or even more. I wasn’t sure. I doubt Kael would chase me for that long, but I had to try. It wasn’t like he’d up leaving me in some random territ~—

woods behind.
Ishin on my feet and wait for Kael to appear, and he does. Soon enough we start running towards the woods. Branches and twigs snap underneath my feet and I continue, running faster and faster.
The direction I’m heading too is toward the borders, the territory lines.
Kael is close to me, his pace not slowing. His wolf form is bigger than me, and the way his body glows in the night is intimidating. The trees around me pass by fast, the wind brushes over my fur.
I run faster.
And then suddenly, he’s ahead of me.
‘That’s all. That’s how far we’re going. His voice rings out loud and clear. There’s a firm edge to it.
No. Come on I say and run ahead, jumping past him.
Then, I keep going, as fast as I can, leaving through the territory lines. He doesn’t have much choice but to follow.
And I’m hoping that I’ve chosen the right path.
‘Rhea, what the hell are you doing? This is no way–Kael growls from beside me, ‘We’ve gone too far.
What’s the problem? Just a little further. I respond. It’s not much, but I’m afraid he’s going to get it soon enough. You can’t protect me if something happens?‘ I try to hit the nerve there.
‘Of course I can! he growls.
With that, he follows me as we move past the trees. I keep heading north of the land, the same way I’ve planned. And I don’t stop. Not even when Kael asks me to, not when his growl reaches my ears, not even when I’m feeling tired.
The more be follows me, the more chance that I have of him not noticing that we’re not where we should be. That we’re moving in a straight line, not running in a random direction.
Some time passes by and he finally catches up to me. His body presses against my side and he leans in close, ‘Stop, he says. But I don’t
Just a little more: 1 tell him, panting hard. I can’t even feel the cold anymore.
‘You’re trying to test me? he questions.
I don’t answer to that. I keep moving until I smell it in the air. Kovas–he’s here. I can smell him and the witch too. Witches have a certain kind of smell to them.
My steps slow down and 1 quickly come to a halt before shifting in an instant. I’m right where I’m meant to be. The tree— the oak tree, is standing right before me.
I rise up from the ground, cold, naked and covered in dirt. My hair falls over my chest as I look at the tree again. It’s the biggest tree 1 had ever seen. My chest raises and drops and before I know it, Kael has shifted too and he’s right behind me.
He grabs me and turns me around.
“Why did you shift?” he questions.

to his own. He doesn’t push me away, no. Instead, his hands come around me and his tongue slips past my lips.
He tastes me, savours me. I’m not even aware that someone’s coming out behind him.
But it happens in an instant.
Kovas appears in his wolf form and lunges at him. But Kael, he’s too quick to notice and he does. It’s in a quick second that he’s a wolf again, meeting with his opponent. Their bodies clash with one another, and then there’s blood.
Blood.
A woman appears out of the tree line, walking toward the oak tree. The witch. She starts whispering something under her breath and her fingers move over the air, touching nothing and yet it feels like she is.
Suddenly, Kovas lets out a yelp and he stumbles on the ground. Blood pours from a gash on his leg as Kael stands right before him, snarling, his teeth and fangs bloody, and covered in blood.
Then he turns and he looks straight at me.
I take a step back, and another, until my back hits the tree. My hands come behind me, clutching onto the rough surface.
The woman continues chanting something. Kovas is at the verge of consciousness and my own legs shake in fear.
If Kael does something to him, he’s going to come after me next. And the way he looks right now, there’s no mercy. Nothing. Only blood and pain. I see it in his eyes, in the way they darken.
I know I’ve betrayed him.
Again.
