Chapter 122: Tale Old As Time
Rhea
Upon hearing the howls of the wolf, I immediately get up on my feet. It’s not common anywhere to hear howls in the middle of the night, unless they’re a call of warning. Or they are sent as an order for a hunt.
I already know what it is. I don’t have to think twice.
They’re here for me. He’s here for me..
I thought I could escape him, that the witch that broke my bond could give me a fresh new start at life, that he’d get it–but he’s followed me here. And I know I have to pay this time.
My wolf keeps trembling within me, and it’s not from the cold. The howls continue, it’s the only sound in the silence, the only sound that anyone can hear.
I leave the barn and rush toward the house. The door’s open, but I don’t have to push it as Ayla opens it for me before I even reach.
“They’re wolves here,” I tell her, though it looks like she knows.
“Yes,” she places a hand on my back, hurrying to come here before shutting the door and locking it. The fear is clear on her face, in her eyes. “I sent Jacob out to see what’s happening. Let’s just hope it’s a pack of wolves passing by and nothing more.”
My heart twists sharply inside me. I keep looking outside the window as if a wolf is just going to slam against the glass.
They’re here for me.
I’m sure.
“What-“I pause, considering my options. She could easily remove me from here, and send me straight outside, but if I don’t tell the truth, then there’s a chance these wolves will kill all of them.
And they don’t deserve this.
“What if I’m responsible for them coming here?” I tell her carefully, in a low tone, afraid of how she’ll react.
Ayla stills, her gaze snapping to mine. I try not to tense, but it’s hard.
“Well, there are always some downsides to sheltering other wolves that walk in here. But that shouldn’t be the case,” she says after a moment of silence.
I take a step back and then look outside the window again. When neither of us is talking, it’s complete silence in the house again. And the howls-
They’ve quieted down.
But if I listen closely, I can still hear them, hear their steps and voices in the distance, coming nearer. My stomach clenches. I try to control my thoughts, but it’s hard. He found me. The whole reason for me coming to this town is that I thoug} one would be able to find me here, that it would be safe.
I was so wrong.
So wrong.

They keep getting closer–he keeps getting closer. I can hear them right outside the house.
I turn to Ayla with horror on my face. But she remains calm.
“The wine cellar in the basement will keep you out of sight,” she tells me, pointing at the door to my right while the wolves approach the front door.
I want to make a run for it, to go to the door and hide myself inside the wine cellar until he’s gone.
But then, I sense something.
Not Aron.
No.
Someone else.
The door opens, and Jacob, the man who brought me into this house and gave me shelter, steps inside. Ayla walks to him with a questioning look on her face, and I follow her from the hallway, no longer bothering to hide myself.
“A man from the council has come with a few council wolves. They promise no harm,” Jacob tells his wife and me at the same time.
The door behind us remains open.
I release a breath of relief, though, it isn’t that relieving. It’s not Aron, which I’m grateful for. But it’s someone who now knows, knows what he did, knows what happened, and knows that I’m his true mate.
And that’s dangerous.
“They’re waiting outside,” Jacob turns to me. “Would you want to have a word with them, or should I send them away?”
My breath catches in my throat. A choice.
Everything inside me is screaming to say no. But my wolf–she’s restless and clawing at me. Not out of fear. Because now she knows it too.
“I’ll talk to them,” I say, stepping forward. “It’s fine. Thank you.”
They both nod at me and watch as I move across the space before reaching the front door. Outside, on the porch, I can smell them: council wolves along with my mate–my true mate.
What Aron and I had–a lie, a forced bond. But this? This is real. I feel it in my bones, in my blood.
When it happened then, the first time, I ignored it and brushed it off, believing that Aron was my only mate, that he was meant for me and that I was for him. That was all until Kovas told me the truth.
My heart races as I step onto the porch and look at him.
The council wolves around him stand disciplined near the premises, but I barely glance at them because all I can see is him right now.
His eyes settle on me, and something flickers in them. Confirmation.
“How?” he asks me, confusion evident in his voice.
A few days ago, I was wrapped around Aron’s arm, I had his mark on me, I had his scent on me, and now it’s nothing like
that.

“It’s a long story,” I answer him.

He takes a look around. “Well, I’ve got the time to listen.” His arms raise a little, and he shrugs. “What are you doing here? And what happened?”

I take a deep breath, not sure if I want to tell him or if it’s even right. He’s from the council. This could all easily reach Aron, and it’ll be much easier for him to find me here then.
Cade steps closer after I don’t say anything for a moment. He senses the conflict that’s clear on my face. Anyone could tell.
“I’ve travelled a thousand miles trailing your scent,” he takes a breath, pausing as if he wants to make sure. “And now, I find you in the northern pass, with no mark and no mate by your side. Back there, your Alpha has declared war on a pack that can very well wipe out the existence of packs in the entire north if he succeeds.”
My chest tightens. My mind starts to race immediately, putting pieces together like in a puzzle.
Aron, Kael, has gone too far.
It isn’t about territories anymore. Or power.
If he’s attacking the Greshire pack, the last strong pack in the north, it could destabilize the entire balance. Like he had always wanted to…
But what can I do about it when my true mate stands in front of me?
