CHAPTER 137: The Return Of My Mate

CHAPTER 137: The Return Of My Mate

RHEA

Tension starts to curl up and all around the town. It comes in waves. It’s first early in the morning that I hear the sounds of. wolves down the stairs, and then now, in the afternoon, it’s more and more. I can see men gathering outside, wolves preparing themselves for whatever it is that is coming

The council

They’re coming. To get their hands on the power that Aron possesses

And me

I don’t know how tonight’s going to turn, how many wolves are going to pay the price of Aron’s madness, or even if I will ever leave here. But I’m hopeful. There’s a reason why Cade came to me that night in my dreams

He’s coming to save me

I step outside of the room and onto the hallway to head downstairs, but just as I reach the stairs, I can already see Marcella coming up with concern clear on her face

She’s so tensed that it almost makes me want to comfort her

You should stay in your room tonight, Rhea. She tells me immediately. It’s not safe to be outside.”

Why?I ask her

She doesn’t tell me, but truthfully, she doesn’t have to because I already know why

Just be in your room. I came here to check on you. Stay inside, and don’t try to go anywhere.”

But-

Her hand comes wrapping around my shoulder and her mouth firms. Do as I say. If you need something, I’ll come up and get it for you. Okay?”

1 jerk my head around, trying to hear for something else, but then it’s all gone. All the sounds and voices and the chatter has stopped

I look at her, then at the staircase, wondering what has changed, what has happened that they have gone silent. Marcella looks over, too, and her expression goes blank

Then we both hear the footsteps

And it’s the same familiar rhythm that I have been listening to for a very long time. It is Aron, no doubt. He is the only person that has a certain manner of walking

Marcella turns away and goes down the staircase, leaving me to face Aron, who appears at the end of it

It’s the first time I’ve seen him since that night, in days

Stay in your room until I say otherwise. He reaches me at arm’s length and tells me

Why?I ask

Your mate will come and try to save you tonight,” His fingers slip under my chin and he tilts it up. But he won’t even get past the guards in the front. He and his council can try, but he won’t reach here.”

I step back and away from his grip, and he lets me. His eyes linger on my face, searching for a sign

My lips press tight. There’s no emotion in my face, nothing to show that I feel something for his statement or for what he has said. But there is a fear in me. A fear that Aron will actually kill him, like he had promised that night in the room

I’ll be in my room.”

It’s best if you are.”

I give him one last look before turning around and heading back into the room I had come out from. The men have left, which means only one thing, that it’s going to begin

The council wolves must’ve been close to the borders. Aron seems to be aware and even a little tense

Does he think that the council has a chance to get him? Or does he think he will defeat them as he has defeated every other pack he has fought with

I draw the curtains and look outside from my window. There’s not much I can see from here except for the garden and the forest, which are far ahead. Everything else is a blur

The minutes pass by slowly. There’s a slight rustle in the wind. It is loud, almost as if a storm is coming, and the skies darken with clouds

It’s going to rain

CHAPTER 137: The Return Of My Mate Tonight

I turn away from the window for a moment and look around the still room. I have nothing to do. Nothing but to wait and watch

My chest rises and drops. I sit down by the sill and lean against it. My mind wanders to the days that have passed. I didn’t. think I’d ever feel more miserable than being in the pack house, being a runt and working under Alpha Elias. I didn’t know it could ever get more miserable than that

But it has

It is

Then, the only dream I ever had was to become a warrior. I always wanted to fight for purpose, fight to survive

But that dream shattered, too

And all of this has happened because of Aron

Aron

My eyes wander across the garden once more. I don’t know why but my wolf keeps twisting and turning inside me. There’s something that she wants, and it’s just outside

At first, I don’t understand it. But then, when I look closer, I see it. See it for myself, a shadow lurking in the trees, and when the clouds part for a second to let a small ray of moonlight fall on him, I see him in his human form. He looks around, his eyes darting, trying to see something

He has come

Cade has come for me

My breath gets stuck in my chest, and I quickly take a step back from the window

I thoughtthe guards….

Without wasting a second, I slip right outside of the door. Aron is long gone, and so are any of his men who were here. The guards are in the front gates, not within the house

Only Marcella is

I can avoid her

Quietly, I make my way down the stairs and into the kitchen, where the backdoor is open, and I go through there

As soon as my feet hit the ground and the air hits my face, my wolf stirs inside my chest. I look at the garden, trying to find Cade, and I spot him

My heart starts beating faster and faster. Out of fear of being caught or seen

Aron won’t let him live if he knows that he pulled his own card. While everything is fighting at the border, while there’s a war happening, Cade has come alone here the same way Aron did when he was supposed to be at the temple grounds. Aron will kill you if he finds you here!I quickly say as I reach him. The guards-”

-I’m not going to let that happen. He says before I can say anything more. I needed to know that you were fine.”

I’m fine. Just a bit-My lips press together, and I take in a sharp inhale. If I leave, Aron will find me. I can’t run away.I’m not saying you to leave, Rhea.he steps forward

Oh?”

The wolves are here. The Council is going to defeat him, but we just need a little bit of help. If we defeat Aron and his wolf, you don’t need to run anywhere, and there will be no more deaths.”

My lips part in confusion. What are you talking about? We should’ve learned from the last time. Aron isn’t that easy to defeat.”

We’ve come to an agreement.”

With that, he pulls something out of his pocket. A box, and within the box, there’s a vial that I can clearly see under the moonlight

I take in a deep breath and raise my head at Cade. You’re going to poison-”

We should’ve done it the first time. There’s no time for any more tricks, no time to wait. There’s no other way, Rhea. This is

the only way to stop him.He hands me the vial. This is how you will get your freedom, Rhea.”

I take the vial and stare down at the liquid. It’s almost the same one that had been forced down my throat

My breaths come out in shudders. Why are you giving it to me?”

He hands me something else. A syringe. An empty one

CHAPTER 137: The Return Of My Mate

His wolf was strengthened by you alone, and it has to be you at the end of the day. You have to be the one to end him. And you’re the only one that can get close enough to do it.Cade says. My head jerks up

I can’t.”

You’ve to, Rhea. His hand comes around mine. This is the only way.”
