CHAPTER 154: When the Wolf Wakes Pt

RHEA

Kovas,I clear my throat and stand up

His eyes scan the room and land on the paperwork that’s scattered over the desk. What were you looking for?he questions as he steps further inside

I sit back down and shrug, Oh, I was justlooking.I reply

He reaches the desk and takes a closer look at everything that’s in front of me

My elbows lean over the table, and I look up at Kovas. The packs that Aron claimed. Did the council assign their rights to another Alpha? Or are they still waiting?”

Technically,he replies. They’ve assigned a temporary Alpha until they can finish their due diligence on the heirs of the original families of the Alphas that died. That’ll take a while.”

Families?”

Children, sons, or any other blood relative.”

Right

That would make sense

What about the lands that Aron possessed outside of this territory?I raise my brow and question him out of curiosity

His eyes meet mine for a brief second, and I know he’s trying to figure out what I’m doing and why

He didn’t have many aside from the ones that he took from other territories, and those had to be returned.”

My fingers brush over the map that’s underneath all the papers. The map of the northern territories that I’ve seen before- that Rhea has seen before

What about that land, the one he gave to Elias in return for me?My gaze narrows over the lines

Kovas pauses, thinking. I think he knows what I’m talking about, and why I’m talking about

That land is one of the only mystical grounds in most of the north. If the council had gotten their hands on it, it means theyve gotten their hands on the witches residing there, on the magic that brews there and the power they can use

I’m not sure,” Kovas answers finally. They’ve notwe’ve not spoken about it yet. I’m still meeting with them for their reports and such.”

Have they said anything about it?I question him, sitting straight

Not yet. Though I’m certain they’ll come for it.”

You can’t let them have it, Kovas.”

He watches me with narrowed eyes, understanding the meaning behind my words, my tone

No, I can’t,” he says quietly, slowly

They don’t know about the location of it, or if it even exists,I stop for a moment, recalling the moments I spoke with the council when I lived with them. I told them about the witch, but I didn’t tell them about the land. About where she resides or the power it possesses. But if they’re making reports and investigating, they’re going to come across it, and that won’t be good.”

He shakes his head in agreement. I’ll ensure the knowledge of it doesn’t reach them.”

Good.”

My attention falls back on the map, on all the packs surrounding, of all the packs that Aron almost had in his possession. He would’vecould’ve parted himself and the northern territories from the hold of the Council

I take a deep breath

Why do you care, Rhea?Kovas drops the question a moment later. You haven’t before.”

Maybe I should’ve, I mutter, bitterness creeping in before I can stop it. My gaze lifts from the papers and falls on him again. I know there are things that I did that were wrong. But maybe Aron had the right idea to part away from the Council and have an independent rule, without their hold on him or the northern packs.”

He’s surprised, more than I can say for myself

His arms cross over his chest before he leans on the side of the table and looks down at me. Why the change of heart?I shrug. The council doesn’t seem to be as righteous as they claim themselves to be, and the whole idea of old men who don’t have any clue of what’s going on outside their safe house, having control of packs, of wolves and their lives doesn’t seem to fair to me.My eyes meet his again. Perhaps, I would’ve never died if it weren’t for them and their hold. They didn’t

even try to protect me.”

I don’t believe they knew.”

Oh,I lean back. I think they knew very well, and they let it happen. I was Aron’s mate, he had many enemies, and they were more than willing to kill me. The council should’ve protected after I gave them their biggest victory.”

You think Catelyn killed you because of him?”

I believe she did,I say honestly. But it isn’t just that, I’ve seen things, Kovas. When I was at their place. I know how they work and what they want.”

And what would that be?”

They are putting dummies on those Alphas thrones, and ruling through them, using them as a puppet,” I tell him. Half of the pack territories in the south are already in the council’s hands, and they’re not even hiding it. And now they want to do it here.”

He’s thinking, I can tell. Weighing my words and the truth behind them

He knows I’m right

Aron had a point, and it wasn’t wrong.I finish

It doesn’t matter anymore. You saw to it, didn’t you? My hands are tied. I can only protect my pack, Rhea, and my loyalties stretch to him far enough that I can protect you, too. But I can’t fight the council.”

I understand.”

He takes a step back and releases his breath while looking around the dark room

Don’t be here for too long. It won’t be good.Kovas turns to face me before heading for the door, I have some business with the pack, but I’ll be back in the evening.”

There is something about this very room that’s drawing me in. I don’t want to step outside, to go out and face the reality when here I can just exist, as he did

As Kael did

Kovas?I stop him before he leaves. He turns and waits for me to continue, Can you take me somewhere? My request sounds more like a plea

He’s suspicious. Where do you want to go?”

To that place, to that land where those witches live. That village.”
