Sophie said, “Dylan, open the door already!”
Matthew said, “Come on, Dylan, I know you’re still awake! The lights are on. Just let Sophie and me in!” Dylan had no intention of opening the door at first, but the racket outside was impossible to ignore.
This time of night was usually calm and quiet.
But tonight, the peaceful atmosphere had been completely ruined by their noise
In the end, Dylan reluctantly went to open the door for them.
As the door creaked open, Dylan stood at the entrance, his brows furrowed in irritation as he stared at the two troublemakers outside.
“What are you two doing here at this hour? Shouldn’t you be back at the Duke’s estate?” Dylan asked, clearly annoyed

Without waiting for a response, Sophie and Matthew shoved past Dylan like they owned the place.

But before he could stop them, they had already pushed him aside.
By the time Dylan closed the door and turned around, the two of them had already drained his teapot dry.
“Dylan, got any more water? We’re dying of thirst!” Matthew called out, wiping his mouth.

It had taken Sophie and Matthew a grueling six hours to get there, and that was after shamelessly hitching a ride on a passing cart for part of the way.
Even with frequent stops to rest, the journey had left them utterly exhausted, parched, and starving.
Being tired was manageable, they could always stop to catch their breath, but the hunger and thirst were unbearable. They had nothing on them, no food, no water, and not even a single coin to buy anything.
They had no choice but to push through the discomfort, trudging on until they finally arrived at Dylan’s place in the dead of
night.
Luckily, Dylan hadn’t gone to bed yet. The warm glow of candlelight from his hut stood out like a beacon in the pitch–black night.
Otherwise, with the darkness outside, they might never have found this tiny thatched hut at all.
“What’s up with you two? Didn’t you take a carriage here?” Dylan immediately noticed something was off.
They were clearly here for a reason, but they came on foot and in such a sorry state, too.
As he spoke, he casually grabbed two rock–hard biscuits from the comer and handed them over. “Here, eat these.”
Sophie and Matthew stared at the biscuits in confusion.
“Are these even edible?” Sophie asked hesitantly.
She tried squeezing one, but it was cold and solid as a rock, completely unyielding.
Dylan caught the look of disdain on her face and said coldly, “If you don’t want it, just put it down.”
He could always eat it himself later.
Matthew quietly tugged at Sophie’s sleeve and shook his head slightly.
Reluctantly, Sophie said, “Sorry, Dylan. L… I’m not saying it’s inedible. It’s just so hard I’m worried I can’t bite into it. Could I have something else instead?”
“No.” Dylan rejected her flatly. “This is all I’ve got. Eat it or leave it.”

And yet, today she had that biscuit

Dylan narrowed his eyes slightly. “What’s the deal with you two showing up so late tonight? What are you really here for?” Matthew paused for a beat before replying, “Nothing, really. It’s just been a while since we’ve seen you, Dylan. We missed you, so we thought we’d drop by.”
Dylan’s lips curled into a cold smile. “Matthew, I’m your twin brother. Do you really think I can’t tell when you’re lying through your teeth?”
Matthew forced a smile. “Come on, Dylan, don’t be so harsh. Sophie and I really just wanted to check in on you, isn’t that right, Sophie?”
“Yeah, Matthew’s absolutely right, Sophie chimed in.
Completely unaware that she’d already blown their cover, Sophie kept nodding along.
Dylan let out a sharp laugh. “Alright, you’ve seen me. Now get out. I won’t stop you.”
Matthew quickly interjected, “Wait, Dylan! It’s so dark outside now. Why don’t you let us stay here for the night?”
“Oh, so you do realize how dark it is?” Dylan sneered. “If you knew that, why didn’t you come during the day? Do you really take me for a fool? Matthew, last chance. What’s your real reason for coming here? If you don’t spill, get out right now!”
Matthew jumped to his feet, but Dylan’s hand clamped down on his shoulder, making him wince in pain.
“Speak!” Dylan’s gaze grew increasingly dangerous.
Seeing Matthew about to break, Sophie quickly blurted, “Alright, Dylan, we’ll talk!”
