Sophie struggled desperately, but she hadn’t expected Adeline to be so strong. She simply couldn’t break free. “Let me go,” Sophie growled.
Adeline sneered. “I can let you go, but you’d better think about the consequences. If you dare to cause trouble once I do, I’ll make sure you leave today exactly as you came in.” Sophie’s expression froze.
“Mother,” Caleb began, but he was cut off by a fierce glare from his mother. “If you defend her, you can join her.”
Not daring to provoke his mother’s anger, Caleb could only send Sophie a meaningful look.
Sophie cursed him as a useless coward in her mind, gritted her teeth, and shook off Adeline’s hand with an effort. “I understand.”
‘I will keep every single humiliation I suffer today etched in my heart. You all will pay for this; Sophie thought to herself. “Hurry up and deal with the mess you’ve caused,” Adeline said, her disgust with Sophie reaching an all–time high. She shot Sophie a venomous look, then ostentatiously wiped her hands with a handkerchief, which she promptly tossed to a maid. From now on, everything that bitch had touched had to be thrown away, lest she tried to harm them.
Sophie clenched her teeth, enduring the humiliation.
Caleb, not only useless but also adding fuel to the fire, tried to placate her. “Sophie, don’t take it out on my mother. She just has a hot temper. You should just endure it.”
Sophie was almost driven to grab something nearby and smash it over his head, to see what kind of nonsense was inside. “Get away from me,” she spat, shaking him off with disgust and refusing to even look at him. After several moments of restraint, she finally reached for the tray holding the poisonous flowers. She had to accept it.
Her father was already disappointed enough in Sophie. If he knew that the flowers that could save Benedict were right in front of her, and she still dared to refuse, he would surely disown her and drive her out of the Stonor family. Then she would truly have nothing.
Now, Sophie felt like a wanderer barely clinging to life, relying solely on the Stonor family and her position as Caleb’s concubine to preserve her life.
‘Even so, I will rise again and crush each and every one of them, trampling them beneath my feet; Sophie thought.‘ Especially that bitch Eliza. I will kill her.’
“Wait.” Diana’s voice rang out. Renee, holding the tray, didn’t let Sophie take it just yet.
Sophie immediately frowned, annoyed. Although it was Diana who had stopped her, she looked at Eliza and sneered, “What, Your Grace, are you having second thoughts about the gift you yourself sent?”
Eliza took a sip of water, ignoring her.
Diana scoffed. “Who said Eliza is having second thoughts? Mrs. Nevill, this is a gift carefully prepared for you. You’re just too impolite. When receiving a gift, don’t you say thank you?”
The guests around them tittered and whispered among themselves.
“After all, she is a bastard child.”
“After all, she’s done so many shameless things.”
“It’s normal for her to be uneducated and unruly.”
Sophie’s face turned bright red with embarrassment and anger.
At this moment, Caleb finally spoke up for Sophie. “Sophie just doesn’t understand these things. Eliza, why be so aggressive toward her?“.
“Silence,” Diana suddenly snapped at Caleb. “Do you have the right to call Her Grace by her name?”
Caleb was also angered. “You just did it too, didn’t you?”
Diana smiled coldly. “What kind of relationship do Eliza and I have? And you? You don’t have the qualifications.”
Diana’s smile was triumphant. Isabelle gritted her teeth, feeling utterly repulsed.
Caleb was left speechless by the rebuke. Adeline no longer wanting to witness this farce, urged Sophie directly. “What are you standing there for? Hurry up.”

Sophie clenched her teeth tightly, her eyes bloous ane giac at Liza. In the end, she had no choice but to reluctantly speak, lowering her head. “Thank you, Your Grace.”
“It’s okay,” Eliza responded indifferently, as if bestowing a favor. Only then did Renee release her grip and turn back to her mistress.

Before long, Renee picked up another item and approached Sophie once more. Sophie had thought the ordeal was finally over, but seeing Renee with yet another item, she was furious.
‘Right, I almost forgot that damn Eliza prepared more than one gift, she thought to herself.
The first gift had already humiliated Sophie in front of everyone and made the entire Marquiss estate wary of her. Now, another gift was on its way. Sophie couldn’t fathom what Eliza was up to this time.
Eliza explained, “This is the second gift I prepared for Mrs. Nevill. I heard that while Mrs. Nevill was at the Duke’s estate, she often mentioned your mother to Lord Mowbay, presumably because she missed her. So, I had this gift specially sought out for you, Mrs. Nevill. Don’t be too overjoyed when you see it.”
In that instant, Sophie felt a sense of foreboding. She quickly lifted the cloth covering the tray in Renee’s hands, revealing a square wooden box beneath it.
She eagerly opened it, only to find what appeared to be just a stone inside. Sophie finally let out a sigh of relief. However, her relieved expression was all too obvious.
Eliza noticed and smiled. “Mrs. Nevill, you seem quite disappointed with what’s inside,” she said softly, her tone sending a jolt through Sophie.
Sophie didn’t want to admit it, but she was genuinely afraid of what other dreadful gifts Eliza might have in store.
Her face pale, she forced out. “No, Your Grace, how could I be disappointed with a gift you’ve prepared? I love it.” Her words almost gritted through clenched teeth.
Despite her irritation, a stone was better than whatever other harmful thing Eliza might have come up with. Sophie had even momentarily thought that Eliza had dug up her mother’s remains, but she had clearly overreacted. Eliza wouldn’t dare desecrate her mother’s grave. If she had, Sophie would have torn Eliza limb from limb.
Eliza, however, smiled sweetly. “Is that so? Mrs. Nevill, I’m glad you like it. Just a heads–up, you should keep this gift safe.” Sophie forced a smile. “Your Grace, anything you give me, whether it’s a stone or a single leaf, I’ll treasure it.”
Once the dramatic wedding finally came to an end and all the guests had left, Sophie immediately picked up the stone from the wooden box and threw it as far away as she could.
But the moment it hit the ground, the stone shattered with a bang into a pile of scattered ashes.
