“Are you seriously threatening me?” Gabriel narrowed his eyes, his gaze sharp and piercing.
“Obviously, I am.” Eliza’s tone was calm, almost taunting as if daring him to react.
Yes, she was threatening Gabriel. So what? After all, she held Sophie’s life in her hands, and that was all that mattered.
Gabriel might not know the full story, but Sophie did, and that was enough to keep her in check.
“Father.” Sophie’s face turned pale, panic flashing across her features as she rushed forward to grab Gabriel’s arm.
“Please, Father. It’s all my fault. I was wrong. I shouldn’t have asked those questions.” Her voice trembled, desperation dripping from every word.
The smugness she had felt earlier vanished in an instant, replaced by the cold, hard realization that her life was still firmly in Eliza’s grasp.
The more triumphant she had felt before, the deeper her regret now. It was like falling from a great height, only to crash into the harsh reality below.
‘Damn her. That bitch. She’s threatening me again, she wondered. Sophie clenched her jaw so tightly it hurt, frustration boiling inside her. But she had no other choice.
Today was the last day. If Sophie didn’t get the antidote by the end of it, she would be as good as dead.
Sophie was terrified of dying. She couldn’t afford to gamble with her life.
For now, she had no choice but to let Eliza vent her anger to her heart’s content, no matter how humiliating it felt.
Sophie’s eyes darted nervously. “Matthew, Anthony, it’s my fault for saying the wrong things today and causing trouble for you. The estate is already in chaos–we shouldn’t make things worse. If you don’t want to take the punishment, let me do it instead.”
She stepped forward, closed her eyes, and stood stiffly, as if bracing herself for the blows.
Matthew frowned deeply. Even Anthony, still being dragged across the floor by the guard, gritted his teeth and protested,” No way, Sophie. Your face is already hurt; if you get hit again, it’ll only get worse.”
“Anthony’s right. You’re our sister. Even if you misspoke, you shouldn’t take the punishment for us,” Matthew added. Besides, they didn’t think Sophie had said anything wrong.
Everything she said was true. Eliza was being petty and vindictive, making a big deal out of nothing. Such were the thoughts running through Matthew and Anthony’s minds.
They conveniently ignored the fact that the so–called remark was entirely fabricated by Anthony.
Standing in the center of the hall, the guard watched the sibling drama unfold with amused interest. Once the scene had played out enough, he finally spoke, “So, have you decided? Who’s taking the first hit?”
After a brief silence, Anthony suppressed his anger and steadied his voice. “If you want to hit, then go ahead. But Your Grace, you’d better be careful. Even if you are the Holy Lady, if you seriously injure me, you won’t escape the consequences.” Then he coughed.
Even now, Anthony dared to issue threats. Unfortunately for him, before he could finish, the man hauled him over and dumped him at Eliza’s feet like a sack of potatoes.
Before Anthony could react, the man grabbed him by the hair, forcing his head up to face Eliza directly.
The Prince Regent Nolan, who was pretending to be a guard for his own amusement, looked up at Eliza, his eyes twinkling with mischief.
He practically said, ‘Go on, give him what he deserves. Don’t worry. I’ve got him. he won’t run.‘
Eliza met his gaze and couldn’t help but stifle a laugh.
