Eliza let out a soft, derisive laugh. So many cheap tricks; it was both disgusting and infuriating
“My hand’s already sore from slapping. Why don’t you handle it yourself, Mrs. Nevill? Eliza’s tone was light, almost playful, but her words were sharp as a blade.
Eliza sat at the head of the room, her gaze lowered as she smiled sweetly. “Mrs. Nevill, I’m sure you’ll do a good job and make me happy, won’t you?”
‘Damn it. This bitch actually wanted me to slap myself? Sophie wondered.
Sophie had been planning to act the moment Eliza struck her. If Eliza had made a move, she could have discreetly sprinkled the poison in her hand onto Eliza. But now, Eliza wasn’t even moving.
The distance between them was only three steps.
‘Should I act? Or hold back? Sophie wondered, ‘If I didn’t act now, i might not get another chance this good. But if we just act now, it’s too obvious. It’s too easy to get exposed.”
Sophie’s gaze flickered, her thoughts in turmoil. Her eyes locked onto Eliza’s face, staring and staring. Jealousy and hatred surged within her, growing stronger and stronger until they consumed her reason.
She wanted to kill Eliza. As Sophie took a step forward, the hand with the poison powder hidden under her fingernail also lifted, inching closer to Eliza bit by bit.
‘Kill her, she wondered. If she could just smear or sprinkle the poison on Eliza, she could turn the tables and threaten her instead. ‘Yes, that’s it, just like this-‘
Swoosh. The blade hissed as it was unsheathed, its cold edge gleaming as it forcefully blocked Sophie’s path.
“Mrs. Nevill, are you deaf to Her Grace’s words?” Nolan’s voice was icy, his blade twisting in his hand until the tip pointed directly at Sophie. “Or are you playing dumb while seeking death?”
As the last word left his lips, the blade’s tip abruptly thrust forward.
“Ah.” Sophie let out a terrified scream. If she hadn’t stumbled back in time, the blade would have gone straight through her
throat.
“R–Ridiculous. How could I possibly do something so treacherous and outrageous?” Sophie stammered, her voice trembling. She couldn’t shake the feeling that her earlier actions had been noticed. In a panic, she discreetly shook off the poison powder from her nails.
What she didn’t realize, however, was that as the poison powder scattered into the air, a small creature hidden within Eliza’s sleeve stirred ever so slightly.
Eliza arched an eyebrow. This wasn’t the first time her little venomous spider had stirred.
Earlier, when Sophie tried to edge closer, the spider hidden in Eliza’s sleeve had already given her a subtle warning. Eliza had been waiting, almost entertained, for Sophie to dig her own grave. Unfortunately, Nolan wasn’t in on her little game. Still, he had clearly noticed Sophie’s suspicious movements and stepped in to block her without hesitation. Eliza felt a fleeting sense of regret, but it was so minor it barely registered. A faint smile played on her lips as she glanced at Nolan.
“If you’re not looking to die, then hurry up and get it over with. Don’t waste Her Grace’s time,” Nolan said, his voice cold and unyielding.
Unaware of Eliza’s gaze behind him, Nolan stood like a grim reaper, his icy presence pressing down on Sophie. His eyes locked onto her, as if he were staring at a lifeless corpse.
Sophie felt utterly exposed, as though every escape route had been sealed off.
‘No, I’ll die for sure. He’s going to kill me, she wondered. ‘He found it. There’s no other reason he’d look at me like this. That look–it’s as if he’s ready to end me right here.‘
Crack. Unable to take the pressure any longer, Sophie’s hand shot up and slapped herself hard across the face. The sharp crack of the slap echoed through the hall, so loud it startled everyone present. All eyes turned to her in shock.
