Eliza, slightly embarrassed by the praise, cleared her throat and asked, “But wasn’t the tracking parasite supposed to be hard to find? How did you capture it so quickly?”
Nolan replied, “It’s all thanks to the information you provided earlier. That leader of the other race, the one you put a spider on, indeed brought another group with him. They’re not many, but their sorcery is extremely powerful. One of them is even an elder. If these were the ones at the banquet, the royal family would have been caught in their trap long ago.”
The information Eliza provided had come from Gilbert.
She had made a deal with Gilbert, asking him to help investigate the cause of her mother’s death and gather evidence.
Unfortunately, Gilbert’s investigation had not gone smoothly.
Firstly, the case was too old. Secondly, the traces had been thoroughly erased.
So Eliza had given Gilbert a new mission.
That mission was to return to the other races as her eyes and provide her with information.
Eliza had initially worried that Gilbert wouldn’t be willing, but to her surprise, he had eagerly agreed.
“Because I was never a pure–blooded member of the other races, Gilbert had said. “My birth mother was captured by them, and my father, a scoundrel from their side, abandoned her after forcing himself on her. She became pregnant with me but died shortly after giving birth due to weakness.”
That’s when Gilbert was taken in by Zoie and raised as a puppet.
Given these experiences, Gilbert had no sense of belonging to the other races and even despised them, particularly resenting his own appearance that leaned toward their traits.
So when Eliza offered him the task of being her informant, he accepted without hesitation.
He even chuckled and said, “Don’t worry. Once I get back, watch how I uncover all their secrets.”
With his cursed appearance, he was more than eager to stab them in the back.
Gilbert left Bortenland soon after, and after a period of silence, he began sending Eliza a steady stream of good news. First, she learned that the largest tribe currently leading all the other races was called the Soulbind Tribe.
Secondly, Gilbert had found out that Zoie’s people were also part of the Soulbind Tribe, and the tribe’s leader was the daughter of the previous Sorceress of the Soulbind Tribe.
Third, the Soulbind Tribe was preparing to send someone to Bortenland to find a new Sorceress and then “kill” her. From the information Gilbert sent, Eliza quickly deduced that the new Sorceress was likely Sophie.
However, she couldn’t understand why the Soulbind Tribe wanted to “kill” her. Gilbert wasn’t entirely sure either, and the reports only hinted that the “kill” might not be literal.
So, Eliza set up this elaborate scheme.
When she killed Sophie, she really did kill her. When Gilbert brought people over, he was really drawing them in. Because Eliza wanted to uncover the secrets the Soulbind Tribe was hiding. And most importantly, she still hadn’t figured out how Sophie learned the secret of the pendant. Could it have been the Soulbind Tribe?
This was the biggest hidden danger in Eliza’s heart. She needed to find out, which is why Sophie had to be kept alive–to lure out that person.
If Sophie really died this time, Eliza would have avenged her mother, but it would be too easy for Sophie.
But if Sophie didn’t die, then the Soulbind Tribe’s secrets would be exposed, and Eliza would have the upper hand.
The result was clear: Sophie was alive.
Yet, the Soulbind Tribe’s method differed from what Eliza had imagined–not with magical water, nor with elixirs, but with witchcraft.
Eliza sighed in relief, though her worry didn’t dissipate entirely.
